i was speaking to a nissan field technician today and i brought up my 240sx. we spoke about the good handling etc. He mentioned the timing chain rattle and he said that without the tensioner working it could skip a tooth. which would destroy the engine.

Tensioner is on the passenger side of the head, and is a necessary part.

We remove the guides, upper and lower...as reccomended by a Nissan technical service bulletin. Upper guide is above the chain, and pretty obvious when you pull the valve cover. The lower guide is on the drivers side of the head, and you have to remove the front cover to get to it...

You're confusing the terminology...

Uhhhh...I just re-read your post...you said "without the tensioner working"...I thought you were reffering to removing it all together.

But he's still correct...without proper tension, the timing chain can slip and then the valves make contact with the pistons, and you need all new valves, or a new head, depends...

on my 200k ka24E the guides are broken (and I'm assuming the tensioner is no longer functioning) and the chain slapped and wore through the water jacket.
