Ok, so I read that "aerodynamics primer" in the sticky, and was wondering a few things:1. according to that, the high wing on a fastback would be beneificial for high speed use(which I plan on)?2. would a GP sports little rear spoiler(looks like a slight lip) do any good, or is it just for looks?

thanks!-chet

i dont know, but i do know that some will help with downforce,if youre going fast enough.i plan on buying the 180sx kouki wing soon.

Just taking a stab at this...

But I would think the deciding factors would be surface area of the wing, angle, and of course design.

Bigger wing = more downforce, steeper angle (to a point) = more downforce?

I don't think a lip spoiler would do too much is what i'm saying.

although look at the spoiler on the escort z... maybe i am full of ****.

1) It would take a properly angled wing that is just lower than the roof of the 240SX fastback to make any difference.

2) No, just looks cool. : )

downforce actually does start going into effect at around 35mph. although a lot of wings look bad on 240s.

While I detest the latest rash of GT wings I have to concede that a properly set-up well constructed wing will help a lot in a top speed situation. I had an R33 GT-R type wing on one of my GTS-Ts with adjustable angle of attack and at about 80-90mph you can actually feel the rear suspension begin to compress due to the increased downforce. In a drag car though I think it would probably not help much due to the short distances involved.

with all the options people are given with wings, how do the so called "drag wings" affect overall performance?

I mean they look just like a GT wing but are just above the trunk/hatch.

on a side note.. has anyone seen those 3-level "vader" wings?:fruitI mean have people in the show scene lost it completely??!?!(I say show 'cause I can't think of any other use for it)

come to think of it I want one, just to have for a swap-on part when I'm feeling REALLY obnoxious:poke

Lost was right on the money. For a street car, it's a style decision, not performance. I've routinely run my '89 fastback, without any big wing at 115 mph (road race tracks), and it's very stable. If you want to go faster, I suggest looking under the hood before uglifying your trunk lid. If you're after handling, better tires will give you the biggest bang for the buck.

thats what i meant (sorry if i didnt state it), that it would only be beneficial if your regularly going at high speeds.i plan on going for style before too much performance (i cant afford any more tickets or not having a license again), thats why im getting the kouki wing.

K:

road atlanta, back stretch, up to 140mph after I finish mods, some atlanta motor speedway use, speeds of 160 if I can get my car that fast.

specific enough? :p

anyways, yeah I was planning on using a spoiler adjusted to about 1" below my roofline, if any...

Nearly any spoiler you buy aftermarket is for looks. Some may add downforce, but its not going to make a huge difference, You may feel it at high speeds, but you aren't going to be turning at high speeds. Also, adding a wing in the back and not doing anything to the front to increase downforce will throw the balance of the car off and make it handle funny.

About the lip spoiler, some of these types of spoilers do actually do something. Higher pressure air gets caught here and hangs out over the trunk, while pressure decreases around the car, the high pressure just over the trunk will push the car down, just like a wing. Again, it has to be properly sized and tested for it to work properly, and it is doing something, it is throwing the balance of the car off.

woohoo, my first post.

Is it safe to assume that the erebuni wing (see pic) that looks like the Racing Beat rx-7 wing also serves no purpose?

Does anyone know if it is adjustable?

Thanks, Johann

Who gave K moderator status... oh boy.. lol...

Putting a wing on without calibrating it is like gamb|ing...

Depending on the size of your spoiler, it could hinder you quite a bit, they can cause quite a bit of drag...

*shrugs* at least hes entertaining. body mods are the last thing I plan on doing, as I would be totally guessing until I got to use a windtunell....and sleepers are cool.

anyways, wheels and higher speed rated tires are first up, allong with an alternate set of yokohama racing tires for track use...with the 115mph governor I dont think I'll be neading much aditional downforce anyways.
