Yokota mentioned making an FRP or carbon cover for his hatch, then riveting it on to fix the holes in his hatch or whatever. ive been searching the site for a while now trying to find a step by step on how to do that kind of thing, because im dead tired of having electrical tape covering up the holes from my spoiler.

i know i cant weld them on my own, and ive heard some bad stories about using bondo-type stuff to fill 'em, so what else am i supposed to do?

if anyone could direct me to a step-by-step process for laying fiberglass, possibly for riveting as well. or perhaps throwing out a better idea for fixing these holes.

i'm still in the process of trying to find a junkyard around here, i just moved 300+ miles from my old place, but even if i found one i doubt theyd have any 240s. I've only seen ONE since ive been here.

i dunno, any help will do. sorry for the gigantic post.

EDIT: preferably some sort of alternative for filling/covering the holes, i also took out my radio antenna a while ago. ive had that hole covered with electrical tape as well

how about that tiger hair stuff? something along those lines? im not sure what i should do.

Get some sheet metal steel and cut a piece in the shape of the upper hatch deck, then weld it on and use Bondo to fill in the cracks, sand until smooth.

How the hell was that a hard thing to come up with? Use your brains, lads!

bondo and sandpaper FTW!!

im in the same situation basically with my s14... i replaced the stock wing with the JDM one and now theres like 2 holes open. i covered them with some grommets from pepboys and sealed with permatex ultrablack... just waiting til im ready to respray before i bondo the hell out of it

good luck. dont let it rust too much.. because s13 hatch rust is like genital herpes

Or you can just go to Lowe's and get some nylon hole plugs... That's what I did for my coupe... Simple and effective...

If you don't wanna weld (for whatever reason), you can fiberglass it. Buy some fibreglass sheets, and cut it (dry) to BIGGER than the hole you want to fill (you are going to want lots of overlay here, so it sticks and doesn't fall down or anything...). Next, mix up a batch of resin/hardner, soak the cut sheet in it til it becomes transparent, and lay it on there. Do this from underneath so that you can fill the width of the metal with filler, sand it down, and paint.

Any other questions?

i had a spoiler hatch that the person before me put an aluminum spoiler on. So i used the thin fiberglass sheets and bondo. If you really take your time sanding you can get it to look perfect. also did the antenna hole.

how the hell hard is it to read?

sorry, but come on. i dont have the equipment for welding, i just moved here. and i have no hookups for that kind of work, because i just moved here. THUS, im trying to find another solution.

personally, i think the electrical tape covering the holes looks better than that, my friend had done that and it looked ridiculous, in my opinion. im tired of having an "unfinished" look after my spoiler removal.
PapaSmurf2k3 wrote:... Do this from underneath
i'm not able to do it from underneath, only three of the holes are accessible from under the trunk lid, leaving (i think) four holes on either side of the trunk, and the hole left from my radio antenna being removed.
sleepyS14 wrote:bondo and sandpaper FTW!!

ive heard some bad stories about using bondo to fill the holes, it could possibly crack, and with no backing to support it, i have a feeling the goop will just glop up on the backside of the trunk lid/rear quarter panel.

and there is no rust in my case, being a coupe i think, all the holes from my spoiler and antenna are completely painted, no rust or nothin'

i think im gonna try to find some tiger hair stuff for it, its about as easy to use as bondo crap, but its a lot stronger from the fibers.

I had the same problem as you. When i bought my car my hatch was rusted alot. I had two holes in it that were about an inch big so i got some bondo hair (same stuff as tiger hair just a diff. brand) and backed the holes with some tape and patched the holes with the bondo hair and im now covoring it with normal bondo. Mt pop's CRX had holes just like this on the rear fenders just smaller and the patch job has held up pretty well (knock on wood).

my friend took his stock wing off his mustang for a bit so he could clean under it and fix something on it and he went to home depot and got some plugs that fit int he holes perfect no water got in but this was only a temp fix. i think that would work better then electrical tape tho if u can find the right plugs to fit in the holes.

no, trust me. electrical tape is barely noticable.

but i said im looking for a FINISHED look. i want to fill the holes. sand it, paint it, etc.

i want it to look like there were never any holes there, basically.

come on.

tiger hair?

tiger hair should would that stuff is strong, we used it on my integra to fill the holes and it ame out nice, never crack for as long as i had the car and doubt that part will. it has fiber glass strans and stuff in it. it should work good.but to get it really smooth you will have to use bondo ontop

on my old car the guy before me welded some metal and the dumb a$$ didn't weld it to good cause it was starting to drop in the hatch you could tell how he just spot welded them in and then painted over them.

it looked good when i got the car but i started to notice over time the metal starting to come apart on the inside and you could see circle spots in the paint from the holes.

Use Cargo QuickSteel. It's just like JB weld, but a hell lot more tougher.Just knead the thing and drop in a good amount into the hole. I would sand the bottom of the whole a little to make sure the thing stays there. It takes about 12Hrs to fully cure. Then it becomes hard as metal. You can put a thin layer of bondo over that and paint.

[QUOTE=Soravia]Use Cargo QuickSteel. etc, etc, etcQUOTE]

there isnt something for it to drop into. it would just drop through. i need something i can like. lay across it, putties or creams or whatevers arent gonna work to fill holes like these. i have no access to the underside of a majority of the holes.

im just gonna go with tiger hair/bondo glass kinda stuff and do a layer of body filler/glazing putty on top to make it nice and smooth. paint. done.

You Also NEVER use a whole sheet of steel across the trunk to patch holes. You cut out little circles of metal and weld them into the holes
