Hello there everyone.

I recently bought my third 240. It is a 89 coupe with the KA and 5 spd. I have been trouble shooting the digital speedometer. I have found the capacitor article and tried that on both my HUD units with no luck, i get no response after heating th capacitors or not.

I have driven the car and the cruise control works so that leads me to believe the speed sensor is still working correctly. Is there reason to believe otherwise?

I have been suspect that the previous owner may have tried to do the speed limiter removal trick on the car which will kill the speedo but have not found any wires cut near the ecu.\

Is there any way to test the speedometer harness for output?

Thanks Erik

89-90 clusters only work in 89-90 240's. 91-94 clusters only work in 91-94

240's. Speed limiter trick on 5-speed 240 cut 5th gear sensor on trans.

Just my 2-cents.

A while back on ebay there was a guy selling a little kit that might or might not fix the speedometer problem. but for $25 I wouldn't mind giving it a try. I can no longer find the link to it, and all I could find online right now is.

http://www.mrwhizard.com/Repai...StartWhich at that price you might as well buy a brand spanking new one from the stealership warehouse. for $238.08http://www.trademotion.com/par...gid=1you can swap for an analog like I did and it works, need the analog cluster harness as well.

The capacitor failure is not the only problem with HUD speedo's. Their power supplies tend to fail, also. Before you send it for repair to one of those places, buy the nissan new speedo assy. If you buy a used one, it will also fail sooner or later. This things are close to 20 years old, they get hot during operation and we cant expect for them to work forever.....

just found an old link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...46972I just had an idea, of a budget multi computer for the car instead. Another person is selling an OBD1 to USB converter for a laptop or w/e which comes with the CalumSult software to interface with the ECU for like $60http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...77782OBD1 to USB cableCalumSult interface on PC

ok, now, how about putting a LCD in the dash and having gauges such asMPHTachO2 levelMAF sensorThrottle positionVoltsEngine Timingwater temp...etcI recieved two small LCDs and they hook up via RCAso... how about this?

he's talking about the digital speedometer, for how old they are, they blow out. when they blow out the HUD stop working too.

Thanks for all the replies. The display is not showing up at all, and the odometer runs while the car is not moving.

I have two instrument clusters that i have tried, niether one works. I have tried heating the capacitors on both and it does not help either one light up.

Is there a test i can do on the wiring harness to see if that is working correctly that anyone knows of?

Thanks again for the replies, this is the last thing i need to fix on my car for it to be done. Im not against an analog swap just want to make sure it will work after the swap.

it's so hard to test, I used a multimeter to try and at least test the circuit. It's so hard to test in such a tiny space, I even filed down a set of test leads to try and make it fit. if only they sold the Speedo assembly I'd buy a dozen of them. lol

The speedo's assy are available thru Nissan. Make sure to get the right one. The SOHC and DOHC are different in price and architecture....
