"Claybrook concedes there's no data to show the 85 mph limit saved lives, but she believes it did. She called the ever-higher speedometer numbers immoral. "

I saw it too.... many topend cars are limited to 155 MPH. German auto makers agreed to cap speed to prevent a top speed race between them.

This is one of the things I LOVE about my Jaguar although Jaguar claims 155 speed limiter all the supercharged XF's are unlimited.

105 in 3rd
135 in 4th
168 in 5th
185+ in 6th it goes off the speedo with about 3500 rpm left and can pull 6th to redline. I have emailed for information about dates and am hoping to be registered for the Mohave Magnum in 2013.

The Jaguar Racing team lowered and increased downforce on a 2010 XFR. Fitted it with a nitrous spray bar across the intercooler changed the pulley on the supercharger and the engine software to the XK-RS parts and ran 225 mph at Bonneville.

It needs a wing at above 170 it feels like its about to take flight.

That blurb about Claybrook made me chuckle too. I think she's inhaled too many exhaust fumes.

What a stupid article. The author must not have been alive before 1990. 85mph speedos in '70s, '80s, and '90s cars are a PITA. There are places in the US where you can drive LEGALLY at 85mph. But these cars were designed during times when agenda-having, misguided, shortsighted morons thought we didn't need to drive faster than 55mph for any reason. So of course we didn't need speedos that go past 85.

My point is: why is this even an issue? WHO CARES? What is it hurting? This is yet another example of idiot mollycoddled "restrict everything so it can't be dangerous" mentality. Hey, Claybrook, how about, instead of worrying about numbers on a dial, you go do something meaningful with your life. "Top auto safety regulator under Jimmy Carter." Wait, wasn't that the '70s and '80s? What was that I said about misguided, shortsighted morons? HEY THERE! We were just talking about you!

Oh, I could also mention THIS:
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8655 ... tml?pg=all
http://autos.aol.com/article/utah-80-mph-speed-limit/

Seems our Top Auto Safety Regulator has been trumped by actual data. Whodathunk.

EDIT:
A quick Google shows this woman was friends with Ralph Nader in the '60s. Explains a lot.

Top speed on my miata reads 140... I would have to be insane and high on meth to come anywhere close to that...even with aftermarket spoilers and wings.

With the Jag 0-60 in 4.1, 0-100 in a little over 9 seconds, it is pretty easy to get into 4th 135+ on a freeway on/off ramp. I am constantly reminding myself to slow down before I'm on the bus.
