What a stupid article. The author must not have been alive before 1990. 85mph speedos in '70s, '80s, and '90s cars are a PITA. There are places in the US where you can drive LEGALLY at 85mph. But these cars were designed during times when agenda-having, misguided, shortsighted morons thought we didn't need to drive faster than 55mph for any reason. So of course we didn't need speedos that go past 85.
My point is: why is this even an issue? WHO CARES? What is it hurting? This is yet another example of idiot mollycoddled "restrict everything so it can't be dangerous" mentality. Hey, Claybrook, how about, instead of worrying about numbers on a dial, you go do something meaningful with your life. "Top auto safety regulator under Jimmy Carter." Wait, wasn't that the '70s and '80s? What was that I said about misguided, shortsighted morons? HEY THERE! We were just talking about you!
Oh, I could also mention THIS:

Seems our Top Auto Safety Regulator has been trumped by actual data. Whodathunk.
EDIT:
A quick Google shows this woman was friends with Ralph Nader in the '60s. Explains a lot.
