I wanted to remove my speedometer sensor but the transmission oil started to leack out. Does anyone know if all of the transmission oil will leak out if i remove the speedometer sensor? Also, my speedmeter works on and off. WHat are the tell tale signs of a faulty/damaged speedo sensor? Damaged cogs?? If i check its operation with a volt meter, what kind of voltage should I expect? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all:help

When you spin the pinion quickly, voltage between the two sensor wires should be approximately 0.5v alternating current.

Never actually taken the sensor out, is it located on the bottom of the transmission (I wouldn't think so), or on the top half?

Logic suggests that if its on the bottom then...well yes, its all gonna leak out, but if itsnear the middle to upper half then no, it won't all leak out. No sweat though, just refill it :-)

You only want it filled to the filler plug level though. Just remove the filler plug (the one on the side) and stick your finger in, it should be about level with that hole.

I have always refilled it from the shifter, which is probably the easiest way unless you've already got the transmission down.

yeah, you'll lose a a quart or two probably. it'd help to jack up only the rear of the car, but either way be prepared for the mess and stench and have a couple of extra quarts of gear oil around.

oh, and it's located near the rear on the bottom of the transmission. for serviceability I guess.
