I recently just had a new clutch installed and after it was installed my mechanic called and told me my speedometer was not working. when i came to pick it up, it was working. then later on that night it stopped working.....but then started working again. My mechanic said he tested the harness and sensor in the trans and said he WAS getting power from the sensor to the cluster, he checked fuses, but still could not find out what was wrong. RPMs work, clock works, gas gauge works, etc except for the speedo. please help me, i cant afford any more tickets lol.

Also, if i need to replace the cluster does it matter if the cluster is from a different year ( 95,97, or 98? or automatic or 5-speed?) thank you!

speedo itself does not matter. if its just that unit going out you can replace it w/o having to swap the whole cluster.

if the problem persists i would start at the sensor on the transmission and work up the harness looking for the wires to be damaged and shorting. just because your mechanic told you he inspected it doesnt mean its okay. in fact, damage to the sensors on the transmission or their wiring is the most probable cause since it was taken out of the car.

Can you go over 3500RPM in fourth and fifth gear? If no, as in the engine cuts out, try replacing your speed sensor.

the guy checked from the sensor up to the cluster and it was reading so i dont think it was the harness. the problem hasnt been happening lately so maybe it was just a goof? weird electrical things seem to happen to my 240. one day the windshield wiper blades decided to turn on by themselves and wouldnt turn off, and then randomly started working fine. and the other day my cd player wouldnt eject my cd, so i disconnected the batt and re connected and it worked ok hah

I'm having the same issue with my 96 SE 5sp. Everything except the speedometer works, but I can hit 3500 rpms and above in every gear. The speedo works intermittenly, making think a wire and not the sensor itself is messed up. Perhaps a connection at the back of cluster itself? If you fix your problem, let me know what it was as I'm trying to fix my own.

rpd240, i dont know if this will work or not, but try disconnecting your negative terminal on the batt and then re-connecting after a little bit. let me know if that works out.
