Finally I have my car running and driving... after two years. The tach doesn't work which I understand is a common problem with a de swap. I have a 90 s13 and I swapped a 95 de (computer and harness so it runs like a 95 not an s13 de) and a 97 5spd. I would like to know if there is a simple fix for making the spedo read normal. and would all I need is a newer tach that reads the correct signal from the 95 computer?

from what i got from the tech that helped me do my sr20 swap was, the s13 signal went from the speed sensor to the cluster which then changed the signal then to the computer. or vice versa. its been awhile. but anyways the s14's did not and that could be your problem. i had to do a lot of little things to get all my stuff working together correctlty.

hope that helps.

i got the exact same problem. for the tach, i just got an aftermarket and used the tach signal from the ECU. but for the speedo, i dunno whats going on. i had a friend tell me its because of the speed sensor. too bad i dont see any aftermarket speedo. =.=

Courtesy nissan sells different toothed speedo gears... But I'd hate to guess as to which one would remedy the problem.

Any other suggestions as to what it might be?

I ordered a different gear for my speedo because it was 10 mph off, so I ordered the next size down from stock. They ended up sending me another stock one. I called them up to complain and they said its the only one they sell anymore, so I sent it back and got a refund. I told them the website shows the other sizes and part numbers, he said they would 'get that fixed". That was about a year ago. I checked with a local dealer they didnt even know Nissan sold different gears.

The 50% off problem has been talked about before, I forget the cause but I think it was you have to use the original speed sensor, but dont quote me on that. If you search you will find it.

BTW did you know you can use the Guages out of your D cluster in your DE cluster and the resistor and it will work with it, so it would prolly work in reverse fashion. DE guages in the D cluster.

I believe the problem is the difference between the SOHC and DOHC tach signal voltages, and probably the same with the speed sensor voltage. If available, try swapping to a DOHC cluster.
