1992 240sx 5 spd. 119Kmi.Speedometer works sometimes, usually it doesn't, when it is not working the odometer doesn't work either. sometimes the needle jumps all round and then dies. is there a nissan mechanic that can tell me if it is the electronic speedo head in the gauge cluster or the speed sensor in the transmission that would cause this problem?

My nissan mechanic said (along with other things) that the wire from the speed sensor to the cluster was the main culprit of my problems.

Just a thought.

it is most likely the speedometer head. but you can also test your sender with a volt meter on ac volts

is there a tool to pop the needles off to replace the speedo head? my speedo head should be here soon and I am going to replace it myself. (But I'm not going to wear speedos while I do it)

the needle will stay on it when you replace it. you unbolt it from the back. take the front clear cover off by releasing the tabs all around the sides.

thanks. I wasn't looking forward to removing the needles after what i read about removing them. So will the circuit board on back will come off to give me access to it? or the whole face will be removed together in one piece from the front after I take off the clear plastic cover?

each gueage in your cluster are individual guages. when you pull the front pieces off you will see their layed out on their own. the screws which hold the speedo in are on the back of the cluster in a diamond patter or triangular pattern depending on if it has 3 or 4 bolts holding it in. btw when you remove the clear cover you are also going to remove the black section that lays over the gauges.

thanks for the help. the replacement was super easy once I had the gauge cluster out, 4 screws from the back just like you said. the replacement was the whole speedo section needle, face and all. it works great now, and I know it's not going to wear out since it is new. I think it was worth the $150 from NissanWholesale parts.
