I had this problem with mine. The speedo would only work if I hit the dash repeatedly or went over some rough asphalt. The problem is the solder connections within the speedo circuitry. The car is 18 years old and has probably seen some hot summers, cold winters, dust etc. I tried resoldering some of the connections that looked damaged in mine but to no avail. I just went ahead and ordered a new speedo through Nissan, but it wasn't cheap. I think it ran me around $350 with an employee discount! After I installed the new speedo, it works great, but the odometer crapped out. When it comes to these types of issues, usually new parts are the best way to go, because, as you found out, electronics that have been sitting in a junk yard for however long are gonna have the same kind of damage.

there is a shop in northern Virginia that does an excellent job of repairing these units he does a few updates which seems to go along ways to helping keeping the speedometer working for years to come. I think by the time it was over with their getting about $200 or so to repair them and their turnaround time is good you'll have to pull your speedometer head out and actually switch the unit out but its not that difficult of the job.
