speedometer and miles gauge not working on 1990 nissan 240

hey everyone. I just recently bought a 1990 nissan 240sx hatchback with the ka24e and 5 speed manual transmission. my question is... what can cause the speedometer not to work? it steady climbes when i'm not moving all the way till its pegged out. a few people told me the cable came off. is that true? if so where is it located and how can i fix this? thanks fro any information yall give me.
