I bought a 90 hatch and the speedo will bounce all over the place, max out or stay at zero. Sometimes work perfectly fine but that's rare. Was thinking speedo sensor
but just wanted to get some opinions.

Definitely could be the sensor. I'd put my money on the wiring or the gauge itself though from your description.

I believe it would be wise if you go under neath and locate the speed sensor, inspect your connections and trace and inspect the wires first... you can try your luck and get a speed sensor from a junkyard or swap it with a friend just to see if that's the problem, it is located beneath the shifter on the bottom part of your transmission with two wires connected to it. Gotta roll underneath the car :rotfl

Had the same problem on my ca18 after i put a new dash in mine turned out to be some bad grounds, the previous owner had all the gauges and light grounded to the thin metal and PLASTIC around the heater lol good luck make sure the grounds are clean and rust free
