ok guys so finished the wiring for my nx1600 cluster in my s13. i reads speed right but the the speed will bounce between 0-9mph while idling, its almost like i have noise on the speedo wiring. also the odometer/ trip meter doesnt work.

Did you solder and splice everything neatly?

What did you protect the solder joints with? I recommend heat shrink tubing as a minimum.

As for the issue, I've done an NX cluster into a 240 before and haven't seen that happen. I would do a check of the VSS to ensure it's not at fault, but for such a minor change in the signal like that, it sounds like a really isolated minor short. The VSS wires are not insulated for EM noise, so I doubt that the issue is line noise. Since you had to cut and splice quite a few lines to make it work, just make sure there isn't a short between two solder joints. Check to make sure a protrusion hasn't poked through the protection you added to make a short. One way to combat issues like this is to make your splices at different lengths so there's less likely chance of contact on the soldered joints. It also keeps the spliced harness thinner.

Thanks hijacker i know to keep them at different spots and the heats shinks. But this only a mockup harness as many writes varyed theyre wiring i soldered and taped for now. When i go back and trim the lentghs i will heatshinks. The reason i think it nosie is because engine off it will constantly read zero but once i start up my s13 it starts to flop around. I have made wire tuck harnes in the past for hondas never had an issuse like this.

Make sure the tach signal isn't crossing over to the speed signal. If you're seeing the issue when the motor is on, but not when the car is in ON/motor off, I would think that your tach signal is interfering. It could be something as random as some junk on the cluster backboard, or trash inside the speedo/tach box in the cluster causing the issue.

id k about that as the NX clusters have the part that deal with tach/fuel/speed on the inside and today i noticed some thing today. after i everything warms up it reads zero at idle i feel like i have a curcit board issue (it feels dim to me, i cant get it to enter test mode, and the illuition dial on it does nothing) i have a spare nx cluster thats beat up on the outside but maybe ill get better resaults with it. and ill trim and solder my harness tomorrow

so complety redid my harness whule i had down timw with my engine. using a virgin 90 cluster harness, soldered and heat shrinked. and is even worse now ill read up to 40mph when sitting or reving. im thinking abt adding a pulldown resistor or some kinda of filter. i have antoher nx cluster but last time i tried it most of it didnt even light up so i never tried it. posting a vid i a min. everything on the cluster now work pefrect minus this and the infumous broken gas light.
