my 90 hatch 5-speed is having speedo problems. it either stays at a speed while im stopped or doesnt move. it drops down when i tap the dash. im just wondering where to start. speedo sensor on transmission, or gear on cluster? any ideas?

When I drove it today I barely drive and it went to 37 mph and stayed there and when I came to a.stop it would go towards zero. It would almost make it before it moved really slow. And also my trip meter seems to be reading less than actual distance

Not that I know of, but the only way for a.cluster needle to stick is to have the motor start to fail or needle get caught up in something. There is no way for a speed sensor to keep giving the cluster pulses to stay in one spot.

Can just the Speedo be replaced without changing the whole cluster

Yes but you have to take the cluster apart.

I have a very similar problem, only when it's cold out, I have a video on YouTube showing what it does, on cold days when I start the car, the speedometer will will read the mph as if I am driving, I'm not even driving it just sitting there waiting for the car to warm up, I noticed that as it reads the mph my Tripometer is also moving, after the car is fully warmed it's fine, I'm thinking the VSS is messed up, I borrowed my friends cluster and it does the same so the cluster is not the culprit, only thing i can think of is the speed sensor on the transmission, my car is a 89 with the SOHC 5 speed with the digital cluster
