Alright.

My 1991 240SX SE Coupe has that oh-so-common speedometer problem.

So let me describe it. My map lights and "pedal" lights work. My door ajar/seatbelt/fluid "idiot lights" all work. My cruise control button (the one on the dash by the pop-up light switch) will light up green when you push it, and there's a light behind it when the light is on.

My wipers work, but not on intermittent, only on the last two settings. My cruise control does NOT work, my Speedometer (digital) is blank as is my hud. My odometer and tripometer both do not work, and there are no backlights on my tachometer. My dimmer switch doesn't light up with the lights. (bulb?) My A/C works, and all of the climate control lights work. In fact, all of my other lights work, too. (which, thankfully, works) I checked all of the fuses, so I don't think it's a fuse. (but I'll check them all again, just to be sure.) My car doesn't have a radio, but has the stock harness. No wires cut anywhere that I can find. :)

So, from what I've read it could be: The TCU (wipers?) the Vehicle Speed Sensor (which would explain the cruise) or the...erm...HUD Controller? the thing on the back of the cluster.

I guess my question is this: Which thing should I check first? I have the procedure to check the VSS (take it off, spin it, check for voltage) but I'd rather not remove it, if I don't have to. (Who wants transmission fluid spilling everywhere?)

And, well, how likely is my TCU to have an effect on my Cruise? It's the lack of cruise control that makes me suspect the VSS, but I don't know. I hope I've been thorough enough in my description. :) I can live with the lack of intermittent wipers, but I'd really like to have a speedometer. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

you are correct the speed sensor is the reason your cruise is in-op but the speed sensor is located in your instrument cluster. the wheel on your transmission is just a signal generator. the speed signal is sent to the ecm and the ascd from the speedometer. if your dash is all digital it could be the controller located directly above the gas pedal. it may have some bad solder joints on its circuit board. or it could be a bad joint on the speedo head it self. i would say if none of the lights in your digital dash are working it could be the controller.
