Recently my speedo has been acting up.

On cold starts it will sit at zero, then as the car warms up it will jump to the correct mph, then back down, then back up. After a while it will actually start working properly.

All the other gauges work (tach, gas, etc.)

This is a SOHC so I don't think I can just swap in a whole DOHC cluster since

Stupid question but what would the "normal checks" entail?

actualy it was a good question that covers all the normal/usual suspects of the famed 240 speedo that just loves to not work. try searching for VSS or speedo, everything that comes up will be about one not working. Have you checked your VSS? wiring? connectors? gauge cluster? all the normal stuff youd check on any car with this problem. The 240 is plagued with this problem and im not far off in saying that every s13 owner has or will be dealing with this eventually.

the speedo from the dohc will work in a sohc. the only thing that won't work on the clusters from doch to sohc is the tach.
