speedo isnt working!!!!!

my speedometer hasnt been working for a while and i noticed that every now and then it will start showing the correct speed.most of the time it just falls past 120 and stays but when i turn the car on it jumps to 90 and stays there.i think it might be back behind the gauge cluster but last time i tried to take it apart very gently i broke a couple of swithches because everything is so brittle.if anyone knows what it could be let me know.thanks!
