**THE SPEEDOMETER IS ELECTRIC**
Lots of us have had to replace our speedometers. The gauge cluster is modular so the speedo unit can be relaced separately, but a new one is still very expensive. You can easily do it yourself with only a screwdriver. It will take about two hours if you've never done it before.
Before you jump to conlusions, you'll want to check the sending unit. From
http://www.240sx.org/faq :Quote »The Speed Sensor is on the right hand side of the transmission just at the end where the drive shaft comes in. To check it's operation, remove the sensor and measure the voltage (A.C.) across the 2- terminals. Spin the pinion quickly and you should get approx. 0.5V A.C.[/quote](I didn't test mine myself, so I don't know removing the sender cases fluid to run out, or not?)
Also check the connectors and wiring.
Speedometers can do weird things as they die. Mine acted "drunk". i.e. working sporadically, bouncing around, falling dead off the high end, then coming back to life and working BACKWARDS! Crazy.
If you have to get a new speedo, be sure to shop around to find a Nissan dealer who's willing to offer discount prices, because otherwise the speedo is quite expensive. If your local dealers are too expensive, then use mailorder. Your other option is to do a search on
http://www.car-part.com and get a used one for about $35. Unfortunately, the speedo problem was common, so a buying a used one is a gamble.
