So there's a lot of myths out there about how to beat a ticket.

For a speeding ticket, there's the tried and true method of disputing the ticket, then changing the court date by making up some lame excuse, and the cop will be less likely to show up. Not sure if that's the case everywhere, but in most cases i've heard this is effective.

I've heard of one method a while back on how to avoid getting point on your license but never tested it or heard anyone try it, probably because it's bogus, but here it goes:

when you get a ticket, then pay the ticket with a cheque through the mail and overpay the ticket amount, so if the ticket is.. $175.00, then pay them $176.00. Then, they will send you a cheque back for the change, but if you don't cash the cheque, the transaction is never "complete", so you avoid getting any points on your license.

Feel free to chime in about other myths or ways to get out of a ticket altogether or just avoid the points.

NY will mail you back the check i believe.

You didnt plead not guilty, you pled GUILTY to a lesser charge

Ive been pulled over well over 100 times, and ive sat in hempstead courtroom over 20 times (unfortunately) but I have a clean license!

NOW back on point... they are ALL myths! If you get a ticket and cant talk your way out of it on the spot with the officer, odds are you are guilty of SOMETHING.... Plea barganing is where its at.

For instance, if you have a clean license and get tagged for 70 in a 55, which is lets say $200 fine and 3 points... when you go to court the District Attorney will ask you what happened, you explain your side (dont be stupid about it!) and then they say...

"Well the best I can do is a XYZ with a ABC, its no points and is a $300 fine"

Odds are that the $300 fine is more than the speeding fine would have been, but paying that extra gets you no points and allows you to go earn more tickets and revenue for the state.

Thats typically how its going to work in NY as a whole, once you get your first points placed on your license, its pretty much downhill from there, they are most likely not going to offer you a 0 point infraction, and you will get points on subsequent violations.

The only way to get out of tickets is to stop them from being written, when you are with the officer, before he takes your license back to his car! Thats your one chance to make it happen!

Ive heard of people carrying a cadet handbook in their car and they put it on the seat when they get pulled over... I personally have 2 shields, and a variety of aids to help me get out of it.

My dad bought all those shields and crap for all our cars (his, moms, bros, mine).

With shields on my car:

2 dui's, 2 speeding tickets, 1 red light ticket (it was yellow). (2002-2007)

Long story short - my dad said we arent giving them any more of our money. We stripped all of the cars and no longer donate to any fop.

Best way to avoid tickets is:

STOP BREAKING THE DAMN LAW.. Damn that one took me a while to figure out, too. - DUI's.. there is no excuse.. What ..so.. ever.

On that note, I've been pulled over 5 times for speeding, over my 10 year driving career. I have one that I got for going 7 mph over the limit. F'ing BS... it was a 70 zone, I was going 72... I didn't realize at night the limit came down to 65mph. BS. Another one I got just 9 days later - 15 mph over - it was 2 am, I had been driving in unfamiliar areas, on the highway, then onto a main road.. downhill. As I crested the hill I noticed the 40 mph sign. I look down and I'm rolling at 60 mph. I went "Oh crap" and hit the brakes. Lucky me, the damn cop was hiding there in plane sight with his lights off in pitch darkness, clocked me at 58 and gave me another gift of financial loss. I would say that one was BS only because it borders on speed trap. You roll off a 55 mph zone and onto what looks like another main road, end up going down hill, crest over a hump, and then bam a cop can screw you royally.

Grr.. and to think each time it was related to me reaching work or working! The irony. I would rather be late and hear an earful than pay $150-$200 each time in speeding fines. Except for the very last incidence, all other 4 times, I was living paycheck to paycheck, so the damn ticket ate up any savings I may have had in the checking account...

Oh, and here's a golden one... back in '05, I'm driving my dad's Lumina sedan (maroon color). I somehow arrive at an intersection with 4 bike cops. Yay me. I look toward them and nod my head, as the goody two shoe I am. I proceed across on the green light and then I notice one cop looks at another and points to my car. Next thing I know I'm pulled over. He says the inspection sticker is expired. Sunovabich. The ONE day I am in my dad's car (instead of my sweet '05 Altima 2.5) I get the ticket for forgetting to have the car inspected 3 months ago... Yah my dad's not good with that stuff when he's busy. Needless to say it was when I was jobless so the damn city took the last of my $200 out of a $300 balance.

No amount of FOP stickers or crap on your car will save you from a ticket if you already have 2 DUI's. Getting out of a ticket is a random event and is solely dependent upon the issuing officer and the subsequent traffic court judge; it has nothing to do with any tactics, tricks, methods or myths.

I hate the hempstead traffic court house. Time drags there.

As I said, once you get points (or a dui lol) all bets are off.. but all the chatchkies help, if you have a clean license...

Avoid tickets by not being a douche bag.

it's hard not to speed when you're just cruising down the street. no traffic around, posted limit is 50 km/h and i cruise around driving 60-70 km/h. cop pops out from behind the bushes and nails me with a pre-stamped speeding ticket. i used to be a delivery driver so i'd be on the raod about 8 hours a day, it's hard to avoid sometimes. my own fault for speeding no doubt, but if there's a way to reduce fines and points its good to know

for those who plead their case as the cop comes to your window, what kind of success rate do you have? i've never done this, i tend to turn into a pansy around police and just nod and agree with whatever they say. i've heard of friends who have driven a good 60+ km/h over the limit and talk their way out of a ticket.
