Does a RWD JDM 5spd CA18DET have a speed sensor wire?

The reason I ask is because I've got a greddy turbo timer and want to hook up all the wires including the speed wire so that I can use the speedometer(mine is way off due to my fiddling with it).

I've tried looking for one on the ECU pinout posted on impactblue.org but didn't see anything that might be the "speed signal wire"

Does the greddy one just use the tach signal wire like the HKS type-0 does or is it actually a speed signal wire?

Thanks for any help.

It's in that diagram, if you're looking at the ECCS Wiring Diagram.. right hand side, right of the Inhibitor Switch, below the fusebox, above the Ignitition switch. From left to right next to each other, Vehicle Speed Sensor, Detonation Sensor, Neutral Switch.

I don't know if your Greddy Gizmo uses the speedo wire or tach, tho..

Thanks, I found it exactly where you were saying.

I tried to follow the connections to the ECU so I could get a signal from there, but I couldn't figure it out. Any idea where the speed sensor is physically on the car/motor, or which pin it goes into on the ECU?

It's not from the ECU. It's a combination of the sender unit in the gearbox, and then is converted inside the dash cluster.

The S13 factory workshop manual in PDF should show this clearly.

damn, I was afraid of that.

I guess I'm SOL. This is going into an S12(using the S12 transmission on the CA) which uses a mechanical speed sender unit.

I'd have to get an aftermarket gauge to use the electronic unit...

oh well, thanks for the help guys

You could adapt the S13 sender to the S12 box. I use a slightly modified 240K mechanical sender in my S13 Silvia Gearbox to attach to my Datsun 1200 speedo :-)

Surely someone has a spare S13 sender you could try. The gear should have the same pitch, but might need some mounting mods to keep it held into the box.

I know I have a spare one, but I'm on the other side of the world. The signal out of that will help. You might also be able to create a speed sensor using a sensor near the tailshaft (which would need a small magnet epoxy'ed to it). Aftermarket speedos use this technique.

Thanks for the advice.

The S13 sender bolts right into the S12 gearbox w/o any mods/problems. It's just that I can't use the signal unless I change the gauge, which isn't an option until after I get the car up and running heh.
