speed sensor?

i was told that on the s13 there is a speed sensor on the transmission.has anyone messed with this sensor because my haynes manual doesnt show it. i think i found it and i gave it a few taps with a hammer, then the spedometer worked for a week. i was wondering if anyone has changed one out and where i could get one. thanks for any input.

it is at the rear of the transmission on the side, they are expensive though...
