Speed sensor check

Hello,
Please advise, I have 93 300zx none turbo automatic. My speedometer stop working and my gears shift erratic (4000 RPM +-) various post mention speed sensor issue.
Well I removed the Speed Sensor set volt meter to AC, and rotated pinion. Book says approx. 0.5v, my readings are fluctuating wildly as I rotate the wheel. It is totally unreadable.
It went as high as 3.999 wildly. Please advise, is the speed sensor defective?

are you sure the volt meter is supposed to be on AC? i would think it should be on DC. maybe try that and see what the reading is?
