I need someone to help me out. I have

1995 240sx KA24DE MT.

Speedmeter has stayed at 0 MPH since i bought this car a year ago. Now I

decided to fix this problem before selling this car, but I am not sure what I

shoud do at first. When I changed the tranmission fluid last time, I noticed

the fluid leaks from speed sensor. What is the best procedure to find

what's wrong with it? Is there anythingelse to check other than checking

speed meter circuit and speed sensor output?

Thanks

Sup,1st verify the circuits work properly2nd verify the vss is not faulty. you can unplug the vss and check the resistence of the vss. It should be approx. 250 ohms. If resistence is ok, take out the vss and plug the connector back in. turn the key to the on position and unplug the connectors on the back of the cluster - probe pins 28 and 35. with the vss out and plugged in, spin the vss quickly and verify there is a .5V reference.

If .5V present - replace clusterIf .5V not present replace VSS

Hope this helps. Good Luck

Eric,

Thanks for your help. I'll try your process on this weekend, but if I pull out the vss, is the all fluid coming out? Should I drain before unplug it?

You will probably get some that comes out, so to be safe just put a drain or something underneath it to catch what ever comes out. I used to use a garbage can lid...Ha

mine has not moved either. i have gone through 3 speed sensor and none of them work. i changed out the ECU, dash harness, lower trans harness and cluster. now I'm down to the tail section of the trans. from what i hear the 240 has a plastic gear in the tail section that turns the VSS. some wear out around 200k which mine has hit some don't.

first thing you should do is check if your odometer/trip meter is working the signal goes from the VSS to the speedo then to the odo/trip

if the odo/trip ARE working then the problem is with the gauge itself, you can get a new cluster/speedo or use a company like DNA Speedometer to fix it.

if the odo/trip are NOT working then problem could be with the VSS... you can test the vss easy enough by using a multimeter and twirling it by hand, if you get a signal than it's good and the problem is with the gear in the transmission.

Thanks guys for giving me some ideas

I think I'll check the VSS first since the odometer isn't working at all. I hope the problem is because of it, don't want to pull the transmission down and work on it.
