I own an 89 240sx coupe w/ SOHC KA24E, 5spd manual. My hud is out, and iam not sure if my speed sensor is wired up correctly. i replaced one, but instead of the factory connector it was spliced on so i guessed, (it did keep my Engine lite off long enough for an im though). My car currently tops out at 79.96, then it has to rev back down to about 3000r's before i can rev it back up to 79mph (about 4900rpms). Its done this ever since i owned it, is the two speedo wires backwards? does the computer have a "limp-in" mode due to a sensor failure? any help would be appriciated. Iam currently in the last part of my first year of my auto tech associates degree, so please be as technical and specific as possable.

i have the same exact problem but it does it in all gears exept first which im sure yours prolly does too but yea it dies if you stay above about 3200 rpms for more than liek 5 seconds and my hud is out too it only goes on when its hot in the car but the rev limiter still comes on. its been doing this since i got the car and the previous owner it also did it it suks!

the "hud" is your speedometer, your speedometer is your speed sensor, the unit on your trans is a revolution sensor. The rev sensor sends a signal to your speed sensor, your speed sensor sends a digital signal to the ECM for speed of the vehicle. If that signal is interrputed or not being sent ,the car goes into a fail safe condition, your limiter. fix the obvious problem and the symptom [speed limiter] will likely reside.
