Whats up guys. Ive just had a rather frustrating experience with Hagerty Insurance regarding my S13 and was wondering if any of you might have some advice or similar experiences.

Basically I was seeking an insurance policy with an agreed value so if the car was ever to be totaled (almost any damage will total a '91 240sx...) by some jackass running a red light I wouldnt get the shaft from AAA with a $1800 check.

The car has been built over the years for track duty, its not a show car. It started up gradually as a daily driver/screw around car for use at drift days/etc, progressed with my driving skill and wound up the 385whp, caged, and battle scared car I used to achieve a D1 license with back in 05. Now I just enjoy the occasional track day or weekend cruise, but being insured through AAA is quite unsettling. I have some friends with highly modded cars who recommended Hagerty for their agreed value policies so I thought Id check them out.

When all was said and done I jumped through every hoop asked of me from Hagerty. I started a new policy under my name for my daily driver (my old policy was under my brothers name and Hagerty required proof of a policy in my own name), sent pictures, etc only to be declined coverage. The underwriter informed me that he could not insure the vehicle because it is a "retired D1 car". I informed him that the car is no longer being raced and he then resorted to "we have very tight regulations on tuner cars and primary only accept those that are modified for show use, not performance". Then he blanketed the entire spectrum by saying they have cut back their policy program for all late model performance modified cars due to heavy losses in that department.

Im just wondering if any of you have had any luck finding a suitable insurance policy for a similar car that wont screw you out of multiple thousands of dollars should an accident occur.

Cheers.

sucks dude i know alot of us feel you pain...

but honestly, specialty insurance targets traditional enthusiasts. Those people who drive old cars that have a high retail value in auctions and are considerably hard to come by.

While your s13 is nice, outside the drifting community and the "tuner" scene, not many people give these cars a second glance.

your best bet would probably run no collision to get the cheapest rate possible. IF you do total the car, just buy it back and part it out, or find a shell... its not like its a 70s porsche or exotic.

not trying to be a d!ck or bust your balls but i really don't think you have any other options.

Sorry I can't really offer any help, but isn't that the drift car from the issue of SCC where they did the skid-pad comparisons? I remember they said the "drift" car was too stiff and too low haha. But I remember that shot from the article, it's a good one.

Haha, good eye. Ya it was actually a lateral G test we were doing using the skidpad as well as a few sweepers at Big Willow. The lame part was the car is set up to run on R-compounds however they insisted that I run RT615's to represent a "street" car. A stiff chassis and 200 treadwear tires dont compliment each other the best, but it turned out OK. Too stiff and too low was still good enough to beat the GTR on the skidpad.

Anyways, Im looking into another company called Rally now. Hopefully things will turn out better with them.

Chubb.

Chubb can cover your car for agreed value (provided you have the documentation to prove your car is worth what you say it is), no questions asked. No track coverage, though. If you have more questions about Chubb, just email me.

Does anyone else wonder if this is a direct cause and effect of the 240 owners that only get a car and plan to rape it over. And when they junk their s13/s14, they try to get what Insurance companies consider to be outrageous for a 20 year old raped over secratary car?

Honestly, I believe the 240 owes much to the drifter for it's popularity. But the amatuer drifter mentality has also given 240's a really bad name. Would you insure something that you know is almost certainly going to get totaled within the next few years? Sure, alot of us plan on keeping our cars for a long time in very good condition. But the stereotype is that it's gonna get ragged out. Really quick.

Just my opinion. It sucks and I hate it too...

i would get it appraised i did that with my monte carlo and 442 so if it gets totaled i get what it was appraised for its a little more a month but worth it in the long run.

I've tried this too a couple of times with no luck. I've put over 10k in mine (you wouldn't be able to tell though ) and it's only worth ~$1500 according to my insurance company. So, I just run liability. this following info is foggy bc it's been a few months and I've thought of it since I first asked but, my insurance agent said for it to be covered under some special insurances (like Haggerty's for collector cars) it has to be 20 or 25 years old iirc. Don't take my word on that though, but I think that's what she said.

Thanks for the info guys. Its interesting hearing other's experiences with this sort of thing. Ill let you know how it goes with Rally, so far its looking pretty decent. Their quote is substantially cheaper than Hagerty too.

I dont see how wannbe drifters who install an SR and diff in a beat up s13 then crash it at the track and try to claim it on their insurance is even feasible. A total loss resulting from collision would require things like a police report, correct? I supposed you could say that you crashed it on the freeway and no other vehicles were involved...but who's to say I couldnt do that with a stupid show car with 50 TVs in the wheel wells and gazilion dollar paint that reacts to changes in temperature? Hagerty seemed to have no problem with an abomination like that.

"On track coverage" was something that never even entered my mind. If you crash it on the track, thats your responsibility. Youd have to be crazy to expect insurance to help you out with that haha.

no police report is needed if it is on private property well at least in missouri not sure if that is across all 50 states or not.

That would be over half the "tuner" cars I see. All talk no walk; shiftlight tach auto with a big wing, definitely a "show" car.

Unfortunately, we ALL get put into that category. The original lady I spoke with at Hagerty actually felt the need to confirm her understanding of our cars by asking "Like The Fast and the Furious, right?".

/sigh...........
