Garrett GT2860R (GT28RS) 350hp "Disco Potato" ball bearing turbo

The Potato turbo great bolt-in replacement for the Silvia's stock T25. In fact, from the outside, the two turbos look nearly identical. The oil feed and both water fittings for the water-cooled centre housings are identical to the stock turbo. They do require minor modifications depending on make and model as they are a generic turbo not model specific (mainly the comp cover and actuator positioning and plumbing).

It was developed by Garrett in the US for a project car called the Disco Potato with an SR20 powerplant. The car's power was impressive, 280 hp at the wheels, but not earth-shattering. The driving experience however, was. Throttle response was excellent, turbo lag virtually non-existent, and the tyre-smoking horsepower was outstanding. The turbo spooled up early, making so much torque, that the best quarter-mile time (13.7 at 104.5 mph) was achieved launching in second gear. The vehicle was so successful that Garrett the turbo as the GT28RS.

This is the NEWEST bolt on sports turbo turbocharger from Garrett, called GT2871R. Many have heard of the "Disco Potato" awhile back, well this one is a step beyond the DP turbo where the turbine section remains the same as DP but the main different lies in the much more efficient 71mm compressor wheel. Typical HP output should range 340+rwhp (400bhp) between 14-18psi with superb powerband, retains dual center ball bearing cartridge, and much more install friendly than the GT25R. The turbo itself comes with adjustable wastegate actuator good for 17-20psi of boost. Bolts on to stock manifold, turbo elbow and downpipe. The only thing needed is fabbing your own intake pipe to the turbo.

Specs:

Turbine Wheel: 53.85mm w/ 76 trim Turbine Housing: .86 ar

Compressor Wheel: 71mm w/ 56 or 48 trim Compressor Housing: .60 ar

In .84 neither the GT2871R nor the GT28RS have been what I would call super responsive. Full boost at 4500RPM is not what I would call lag free, although the 315hp at that point (with the GT28RS) was pretty nice. I switched to a .86 GT2871R and the spool is pretty much the same, 4500, but the power level is higher (400hp with the .86 is possible with supporting mods). However, I think that if someone wanted a responsive quicker spooling turbo, they'd be better off with the .64 AR. Sure, theres a power difference, but spool should be around 3500-3800rpm from what I've heard so it'd be Decent power earlier in the powerband where most daily drving is done.
