Spec V Timing Chain Cover

My friend drives a 2002 SE-R Spec V.He blew his head gasket.

He is trying to get the timing chain cover off but it is stuck on a fitting at the bottom/front of the engine that extends down about 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch into the aluminum piece where the oil pan mounts up.The cover is completely unbolted and wiggles freely but will not come off because it is stuck on that fitting.

I just need to know if there is any special way of getting this off, if the fitting need be removed or what exactly.I hope you all can help. Thanks.
