still relatively new on this forum and just want to say im a huge car enthusiast, however im brain dead when it comes to fixing them. I love nissan and any import for that matter, but my family was built on muscle cars and they are pretty reluctant to help me out. That being said heres my problem(s).

My 02 spec V has been dead for a little over a year now, head gasket problems i think. Nobody has actually started taking it apart and assessing the situation so the first weekend in february I am digging in. I have a GM mechanic and a cousin/mechanic-to-be helping me out.

Is there anything specific anyone on here can tell us to look for? Special tricks or techniques that might help the process along? Things that will definitively confirm a blown motor? Best places in PA/NJ/NY for parts and prices, or anywhere else for that matter? Anyone interested in the job? If so how much?

Just want to say thanks to anyone and everyone that replies.

I had an 02 SpecV, Bought it brand new, Put 3 motors and 2 transmissions in it... But loved that car... Got a Long block from the dealer... One of the junk ones from my car... (Long Story)... But anyway.. I started to tear the motor down and i found it really easy. Only problem i had was getting the one cam out. It actually snapped in 2 pieces so if your going to reuse them be careful... And youll also need a 10mm allen socket for the head bolts... Make sure you get a good one i broke 3 of them getting those out. And have a big breaker bar for those dont us air. Everything is aluminum.

If i was closer i would help out.

Oh and if you get tired of it and want to sell let me know. I would be very interested it taking it off your hands.

For me Chalk the first one up to the lovely Cat in the header... What a great design that was... (insert Nismo Race header Here)... Chalk the second one up to the Retard at Nissan that didnt torque the flywheel bolts down on my JWT set up...which i had them throw in while the motor was out. Clutch and Flywheel were both reuiened.. 1000k on motor and flywheel came loose = junk... Got that motor from them for free and started tearing it down and bulding it... 3rd motor was the oil consumption part... never did hear exactly what happend with that one...

I am good friends with the Mechanic that finially fixed it right... and we both have WRX's now. and a 240... I loved my SpecV... but if i wouldnt have got rear ended and totaled it... I would have swapped in an SR20 Blue bird... the QR is crap.

yo thanks for the feedback guys. ive been in love with the spec v's since they came out and once i finally get one this b.s. happens. im not giving up on this thing. i drove it twice the in the morning on the day it died and when i went for lunch i had nothing, didnt even crank over less than 4 hours after it was driving fine. i did have an engine code pop up a few times in the weeks prior to that for the "idle control valve", anyone else get that?
