Hey guys, been a long time memeber with my 240sx and just sold her. I have always wanted a spec V and had a few questions. Any common problems or quirks to watch out for? How do you like your spec V?

Also, I found this:http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/...t=254

thats a good deal.... But I ran carfax and the thing has had 7 owners so I dunno. All help, general info, e.t.c. would be appreciated. Thanks!

The biggest quirks with the Spec and the "just an SE-R" are the butterfly valve problem, and in the case of the 2002 model, oil consumption problems. I, myself, own a 2k3 "just an SE-R" and love the damn little thing.

I would stay away from the 2002 like it had the plague unless the motor's been replaced.

The car itself is a fun little car to have as long as you get the quirks handled. It responds fairly well to all of the basic bolt-ons. The QR motor itself has pencil thin rods, so if you want to take it much past about 270whp, you need new rods and pistons.

The "butterfly valve problem" is an issue that from the factory, there are no lock washers or thread lock on the butterfly valve screws. These screws can become loose due to vibration. When the come loose, and/or come out they can and will get sucked into the motor. I should know. I just got my motor replaced last week due to damage from four screws and two butterfly plates.

One of the REALLY cool things about this car is that the Altima/Maxima/350z 3.5 liter motor FITS into the engine bay. There is a guy that sells the swap, he used to sell the kit and you could do the swap yourself.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any other questions and I will answer them as best as I can.

also there is a serious problem with pre - cat failure and was recalls on this but if u get a header you dont have to worry about it, u can also check out some other forums based solely on the b15 chassis only like the v board and b15sentra.net and far as a vq swap the mad man behind these is Travis and he can be found on both of these forums, he usually charges around 5k for the swap and he gets to keep ur powertrain in exchange for the vq, but the v board has a whole thread based on the swap....but read up on the spec v and check into it and make sure it has all the recalls done

We have threads on this pretty often, I think a Spec sticky may be in order.

Anyway, it's all pretty much been covered.

1. Pre-Cat failure - Affects all B15 SE-Rs. Replace the exhaust mani with an aftermarket header, make sure to have an extended warranty if you keep the stock header, or, if you're without the warranty, pray.

2. Butterfly screws - Affects all B15 SE-Rs. Loctite them, problem solved. It's an easy process.

3. Crank sensor recall - Affects both trim levels. Call in your VIN and see if this needs to be dealt with

4. Fuel pump failure - Affects 04-06s, typically. Check the VIN with the dealer, though they may not actually have anything on it. If it fails, you'll probably get a free fuel pump anyway.

5. transmission failure - Affects 02 and 03 Specs (6spd), occasionally 04s. A dealer *should* replace it for free if it craps out.

i just looked at the pics of and it does have an aftermarket header so no worries there, but the butterfly valve screws are a matter that will own u if they aren't loctited

man i own an '03 sentra spec v as my daily and i gotta say i love driving it.... its a fun quick little car .... i have a greddy full exhaust system (no cats) and an injen short ram intake , just basic mods and more than quick enough to handle a good amount of cars out there...lol... i dynoed mine at a show (it was one of those trailer dynoes, so i dunno how accurate it is) and it put out 153whp and 164wtq, the guy sed there was a 17% powertrain loss.... but i dunno.... i ran it at the track and ran a 15.3 at 89-90mph not bad considering it was my daily driver and i ran all weather tires and had stock motor mounts, which should be one of the first things you should modify, plus this car is pretty damn light for a 4 door it weighed at 2635lbs without me in the car, not bad i always say...lol.....but like i sed i love this car juss make sure you keep an eye on your oil levels and be consistent with your maintenance/oil change.... i change mine every 2500 with royal purple oil and check my levels every couple of weeks....im a bit of a spirited driver thats why i do this...lol... but i blabed on enough thats bout it....lata...
