Just bought some 4x6 Boston Accoustic FX7's the other day. I yanked the door and wouldn't you know it, the speaker mount is the wrong shape for the new speakers. Anyone with some after market speakers have advice on what to do?

Also, I haven't pulled the rear panels yet, but now i'm worried that they won't fit in the back either.

what i did was just traced the outer edge of the plastic thing that holds the speaker and made my own mounts out of wood.... it worked out nicely you should give it a try

use a drill to redrill a little bit into the bracket from the door. 4x6 plates should install no problem, but might need a little bit of extra finesse ala drill into the plastic bracket to make em fit. I had that problem on my 89 fastback when I had 4x6 infiniti kappa plates up front, I just drilled a little bit into the back plastic bracket that holds the speakers into the door. That was until I made my own plexiglass brackets to hold 6.5" speakers. I have installed infiniti kappa 63.5i's in the doors now, but they rattle a bit because of poor choice of material. The plexi loves to vibrate. So this winter I'm building an aluminum bracket that's got dynamat extreme on both sides of the bracket. That should help deaden the vibrations if I do say so myself.

I'm prolly gonna head out to home depot tomorrow and pick up some 3/8" MDF board and make some mounts out of that. Of course, i need to exchange one set of speakers i bought because i thought i had 4x6's in the rear. oops. i was hoping to have new speakers all the way around in my car today and ended up having a gaping hole where one speaker is removed and a naked door :p

If you make your plates from mdf as suggested, you can fit a 6" in the doors. I usually use a 4" in the back, but a 4x6 will fit (FB only). You get better sound out of round speakers. The plates in the door sdhould be coated with fiberglass resin once cut. This will keep the moisture from the window/door from making them sponges.

problem solved. i just took a hacksaw and some tin snipes to the edges and trimmed them down till it fit. So i got to keep my stock mounts and had to do a lot less work.

and i found out the funness of trying to stuff some 6.5's in the rear. i don't know if the coupes have the same problem i ran into. the circle that's been cut out for the speaker has a flat spot on it which prevented me from getting my boston accoustics FX6's from fitting. After a quick trip to the audio store, we decided i needed a set of alpine sps-170a's. the flat spot prevented me from installing it in the correct position because the connectors bumped into it. but upside down, i was free and clear to install.

i stuffed some 6.5" in the rear, you just gotta cut stuff and drill new places till it fits. Be creative with the powertools. but in my 240sx that i actually drive, its got 4" all around, sounds way good cause 10" subs got their backs. small speakers are fine if you got other means of bass.

you have to remember that the coupe/convertable gets 6.5" for the rear speakers, so fitting a 6.5" is no problem. The oval just has a flat side which caused me to have to install upside down. Also, I prefer not to cut away at my frame as much as possible. Granted, a small amount isn't going to kill the structural integrity, I'm lazy and don't like to hack away at metal.
