Has anyone installed components in the door? What is the mounting depth? Did you need spacers?

They're 6.5" right?

i just installed some the mounting depth is fine but you will need the adapters or spacers which can be had off ebay for about $15.

What size were the spacers? 1"?

I'm looking at speakers with a top mount depth of 2.5"

If you end up doing a component install, don't forget to post pictures of steps! I have a some Kappa's I want to install but I haven't seen enough pictures of others doing it yet to tackle it

I'm probably installing convertible components so no custom tweeter pods or anything too exciting.

I dont have the bose system (thankfully), but the stock speakers suck compared to decent components.

I got them all mounted (took like 6 hours because I ended up cutting holes for tweeters in door), and they sound fine. Fine until I start the car that is.

I get terrible noise in the speakers with the engine running. I guess I need to do the big 3 mod. Does anyone know where to get 1/2 gauge cable cheap? Also, does anyone have pictures of where to ground the battery/engine etc?

Why is everyone mounting the tweeters in the door panels? Please tell me you looked into how expensive it is to replace that interior panel. It's going to cost a bunch when you go to sell the car. Either that, or you're leaving the stereo in (which most people wont want and wont pay extra for).

It produces better imaging and I have no problem leaving the speakers in. I paid $110 for them and I'd rather pay another $110 for new speakers than spend the time to take them out.

Applebonker where did you run your ground cables in the engine bay to? Seems like theres really no room to work in there. I saw some pics of cable runs inside the hood but I didn't see where they terminated.

[edit]Im gonna try hooking up an mp3 player to the inputs on the speaker amplifier to see if an external source produces the same bad noise as the HU. I'm not so confident in my RCAs since they aren't twisted and seem to be designed for home audio. (Also the antenna power runs down the right side of the car, right?)

Yeah, I feel what you are saying Apple..... I thought about putting mine in the stock dash location, but that doesn't produce the best acoustics and it is a pain to get to so I did this:

At least I know the pieces cant be too expensive to replace if I ever need to....

I understand what Applebonker is saying... mounting in the doors IS expensive if you ever decide to replace them, if you plan on selling the car and decide to keep the speakers in there, I guess is not that bad of an idea...

mounting onto the triangle pieces on the corner of the window is a great alternative, however, its not as clean as a flush install

Apple, you must also remember that you have SUPER HIGH QUALITY TWEETERS operating off of a well tuned active crossover system.... I think without proper tuning, placing bright tweeters in the dash firing up at the windshield could be problematic for some folks. I've heard folks replace their factory 3.5's with harsh tweeters in the dash, and they sound horrible...

I made custom A-pillar monts for my three way active crossover system up front, but that can be a bit expensive...

HOWEVER, I think a decent comporomise between acoustics, appearance, and cost would be to flush mount them in the a pillars themselves... but hey, we all do things differently

oh yeah, Applebonker, I know its a ways away, but I'll be in Chicago in April for a medical conference so I will definitely be checking out your sound system!
