Speakers and Channels on an amp?

I'm trying to figure out how amps and speakers and channels correlate in a car audio setup. I'm doing my reading but still having some confusion. If I have a 4 channel amp, does that mean it can only get connected to four speakers in the car? Or can it go to 8 speakers if I splice the wires right?
