Here's a question... did your cap mod change the lows?
From the specs I could find online, I assume your Infinity speakers are REF6030cs? Their cut off for the low range is higher than mine... 50 vs 35. The Basslinks has a cutoff at 20... All in all, the ref's range is 50 Hz to 21 kHz, my pioneers are 35 Hz to 28 kHz and the Basslinks are 20 Hz to 120 kHz. So I wonder if you'd think you still need a sub if you used something with a different range.
While I don't listen to much rap, I do listen to a number of R&B and similar sounding music. I am quite satisfied with my set-up. Perhaps it's really just my listening style, while you can hear my music from a couple of car lengths away if the area is quiet (windows closed), you don't feel any thumping (unless you're inside the PF with me).
Too be honest, based on what I've been reading... it feels like Infinity purposely made their speakers "weak" on bass... so that you get their subwoofers to go with them (aka more $$$).
As far as the front speakers are concerned (the front tweeters are wired in parallel to the front door speakers from the factory) the capacitor mod doesn't cut any frequencies for the door speakers, only the tweeters. Technically the front speakers are receiving the entire spectrum (all high, med and low freq's). As for the rear door speakers, they are wired in series with the crossover which has the rear tweeters also wired in series. The rear doors have a low-pass crossover so they only the mid's and lows whereas the rear tweeters handle the highs.
I have the Infinity REF6012's. They aren't even in production anymore and I bought them right after I bought my car about four years ago. They have a range of 53Hz - 21KHz which is pretty crappy. I didn't really know that much about the speakers when I bought them and I was on a pretty tight budget. The speakers do hit a decent amount of the lows, it's just that they aren't powerful. I can hear the low notes in the Rap and R&B songs it's just that they are hard to hear. I can turn up the bass or turn up the bass booster on my head unit but then it just starts to distort at higher volumes and it sounds like crap. If I had to do it over again I would not buy Infinity speakers, I would put in JL or Alpine two-way components in each door (probably Alpine since they are much cheaper and give a lot of bang for your buck).
I have my doors Dynamatted so you can't really hear the music from outside the car very well. If it's turned up really loud then you can.
I remember less than an hour after I installed my new Alpine head unit and the Infinity Ref's, I bought the sub/amp because it still sounded horrible. I don't need a lot of bass, I keep my subwoofer turned down quite a bit (you absolutely cannot hear my subwoofer outside of my car when the music is turned up) but I need to hear the lows to balance out the highs. Right now my highs are really overpowering and the mids are a little muddy but alright. I've had to turn down the highs and try to turn up the lows just to balance it out but nothing has worked.
