Do speaker screens (covers) affect sound greatly?

I am doing a stereo install in my 93 pathfinder and wanted to keep the original covers. Am I shooting myself in the foot by doing this? Will I have a major reduction in sound quality?

The speakers I bought do not come with covers.

The tweeter will be affected more than the mid. Grille cloth is not really a problem. Heavy plastic grilles block lots of sound.

Ideally you don't want anything covering speakers, or even be around your speaker besides a flat baffle. However, a muddy shoe kicking your door speaker will effect the sound much more than will a metal perforated grille.

cool, thanks

The ones I have are metal screens. Well perforated, but definitely solid metal.

The comment about the muddy is the clincher for me though...that's totally right and I would definitely kick the thing at some point. Better to kick a screen than the speaker for sure.
