I noticed that my pillar tweeter and driver side door speaker will only barely work when the volume is completely maxed out. All the other speakers are fine with normal levels. Are the speakers blown out, or is there some other issues going on? Is there some amplifier that has blown out?

Each speaker has an amp built on to the back...its common for those amps to go...you can either get the amp repaired (cheap and a lot of places do a lifetime warranty) or you can get an after market headunit. It has a double DIN opening so you can pretty much get any headunit you want.

Well, not in the case of the tweeter. It is powered by the door speaker amplifier. There are previous posts you may wish to read.

That is correct, I apologize. I've never really considered a tweeter its own speaker but as a component, but you are absolutely right it is the midrange that is powered then crossed over to the tweeter.

*EDIT* I apologize it is not a crossover, but a what I imagine is a capacitor. Also I apparently discarded the amps when I put in my aftermarket stereo, but I may have one or two at a buddy's house.

I recently had the exact same problem, which is why I put in the aftermarket system. I went and had the amps tested, 2 passed, one was marginal and one failed. The guy here was going to do the amps and the lifetime replacement for all 4 amps for $600 and assured me I would be pleased.

Also I should have asked this before but when the driver door speakers do play, how do they sound? distorted at all? popping, hissing, cracking, etc...

Well I bought the car with the speakers not working, so not sure what they sounded like before. However now, if I fade to the front and to the driver side with volume fully cranked, I can barely hear them. No popping, hissing or cracking or if there is any it is too quiet to notice.

Yeah... amp failure is common. From what I have experienced, they pop, whine, and hiss for a while - then just fail completely.

The front speakers are 4 inch components and can be replaced for relatively cheap. Bare in mind that the factory bose head unit does not provide amplification, so you would need to either a) replace the bose head unit with a good one, or b) replace it with an after market. I can check if I still have the good amp for ya...

Do these amps just fail over time or was somebody cranking it too loud all the time?

The amps just fail. My G50 had two bad amps in the front doors that made the hissing and popping noises. The previous owner really never listened to the car stereo so the failure was not from use. I got the amps overhauled in Florida. Since the speakers have had little use, the system sounds good.. It cost less to get the amps repaired than to change to an aftermarket setup.

I might look into getting them repaired. What exactly goes wrong with the amps? Is it just a soldering issue or a bad capacitor? A fresh Q45 was in the salvage yard last week, but the 240 kids raped it of the mass air flow sensors and injectors.....all the speakers and door panels were taken too! The driver seat was in really good condition, but hey wrecked it getting the other stuff.

The capacitors go bad. The problem with having them rebuild is the volume may or may not be the same left and right. I had one rebuilt and it came out twice as loud as any other amp in the car. I couldn't get the balance or fade right without the rebuilt amp drowning out the others. If you only need to replace one I have a couple of good amps left from my last partout for a lot less than you'll pay to get them rebuilt. Send me a PM if you're interested.

I wonder if they used the infamous capacitors that were used in the 3000GT and Stealth ECUs? I read that early 90 ones have a lot of issues. Does the 1994-1995 ECUs have any known issues?

I haven't heard of any issues with the Q45 ECU's. I bought 96 Nissan/Infiniti speaker/amp assemblies from a salvage yard and of the 40 amps from 89, 90 and 91vehicles only 5 were still working. There were 46 amps from 92-97 vehicles and 40 of them were working. They definitely had problems early on.

Glad to know that they seemed to fix the issues somewhat. I snagged one from a parts yard the other week, I hope it works! If not it looks like there are some offers on this thread for a replacement.

Saw some front speakers with Infinity speakers at the parts yard, I imagine these will work better than the factory cone ones? Eh worth $5 to try it out!

Infiniti makes some Bose replacements that I believe are 2 ohm.. It will cost a lot less in the end to keep the stock setup if you can just get the part repaired. If you send amps to Florida for repair, send both so the amps can be balanced before being shipped. Also, MIke goody90q45 has some amps for sale.

If you're handy with a soldering iron and have patience, just replace all of the capicitors on the board. I'm pretty sure that's what they do at the repair places.

The volume shouldn't be different... I wonder if Mike's problem with uneven sound was that he got the wrong board back? (swap instead of rebuild?) The line level/amplification ratio changed between 90 and 91.

Eh, I am a bit lazy when it comes to soldering. For $5 a speaker at the salvage yard, I find that more cost effective for time spent!

I've only got one left, a front amp, and of course a full set for my use in case one ever goes out.
