Speaker mounting depth?

I'm ready to upgrade my stock speakers (which I know are 6.5") but before I place an order and pop the door panels off, what is a safe mounting depth for the new speakers? The ones I'm interested in are 2-3/8" but I'm worried that might be too thick.

You could try this. It's an adapter so you shouldn't have to drill new holes and it would space out the speaker some so depth wouldn't be an issue.

You can turn your old speakers into spacers.
