I have looked all over trying to find out what is the maximum speaker size I can get for my back speakers. I am willing to do SOME modifications, but nothing that involves cutting major chunks from my interior. I'm thinking like 5.25 or 6.5 range. Anyone have any advice or links to other posts? Thanks.

BTW I am looking to actually get active on these forums this time...being that this is my 3rd S13 and all

5.25 is the stock size, but I'm pretty certain you can fit 6.5's in there, may require some cutting though. I made up some custom brackets to fit 6.5's in the front door panels.

H2o4s0esixn... Welcome to NICO!!!! Great to have you here! It's always nice to get some new 'vert owners... especially those who are knowledgable and can help bring new info and ideas to the table... Judging from your other post, it sounds like you know your way around a 'vert pretty well. So, please be very active!

as for your question about the speaker size in the rear.

The hole is large enough to fit 6.5" round speakers. But, you have to have the right speakers. The space is not very deep, so you need to find speakers that don't have a deep magnet.... OR, you need to build them out with a bracket or spacer to give them room.

I tried infinity Kappa's and the bucket was too big to fit in the hole... then I tried some kenwoods and they fit ok.

Ultimately, I would up changing back to 5.25" speakers. My reasoning is that the 6.5" were so close to the metal that I fealt they were actually distorting due to the magnetic pull in relation to the metal being so close.

So, I currently have a set of 5.25" and I'm very happy with them. I plan on building a sub into the trunk space (or an infinity basslink). With that bass I won't need the bass from the rear speakers at all.. I can cound on them for only clear mid and highs...

I also am putting in bass shakers into the front seats to supplement the "feel" of deep rumbling bass. That should make for a pretty impressive feeling system.

I do have 6.5" rounds in the front doors (those Kappa's I mentioned earlier fit nicely in some homemade brackets.. )

Hope that helps... You could also referance this thread to see what AZhitman put in his rear speaker holes... .zerothread?id=90488

Hope to see you on here lots in the future!Eikon

have a speaker close to metal will not make it distort, the voice coil is contained inside the magnet, which has a powerful enough magnetic field inside the gap to easily overcome any ill effects, even with another powerful magnet close to the speaker it wouldn't be a problem.

You can fit anything back there if you want to, I've fit 8" subs or larger in similar installs in the past, but you'll need to build it out with fiberglass and probably modify the rear panels.

he's talking about the stock speaker locations in the side panels. I don't think you can get an 8" sub in there without completely refabbing the rear panels. Are you talking about 8" subs behind the seats/in the trunk area??? Or are you talking about virtually eliminating the back seat to make it one large speaker box.

no I'm talking about the stock rear speaker locations... an 8 sub would fit in there pretty easily with some fiberglass and a 3/4" mdf ring. the original 5.25" hole would just be for magnet clearance, the space behind that would be part of the enclosure. I'm betting with a bit of work I could even fit the stock plastic back over it.

Cool, I will be getting a sub as well. So I'm thinking 5.25 would be fine=) I'm glad to be back! =)

5.25's fit the stock mounting points in the back and 4x6's up front, but be warned, neither of those sizes are gonna blow you away with their low frequency output. subs are heavy I'd rather just cram a set of 6x9's in the doors... but I have something special planned for mine.

You should check out the audio and security forum got lot's of info on speakers including a sticky on speakers sizes. But realistically why even bother putting speakers back there? Are you going to have someone ride in the back seat? With a convertible its not like they will make a big enough improvement in volume or clarity, I suggest investing in quality set of front speakers, your subwoofer, and descent amplifier with enough power to run the show.
