I let my 87 z24i 4x4 truck sit for 2 weeks without starting. It started right up(but had a terrible rough idle) I drove it about 5 miles (it warmed up fully), parked it and a couple hours later it wouldnt start(not even a sputter). I pulled off the ignition and exhaust wires that run from coil to distributor and neither one is sparking when held next to a ground and engine is being cranked

It does not have any bad fuses or relays. I have a hot wire going into the metal thing with cooling fins and a ground wire and another wire(3 wires in) only 2 come out and theyre going to the part of the coil that my distributor wire comes from and one of those is hot with key on. The other shows no ground or hot. Not sure how this wiring is supposed to be.
Could this be my crank angle sensor instead? Thanks for any info/tips

Zach

Welcome to NICO! So you do have power going to the coils just no spark coming out?

The two wires going into the coil are black/white, and blue. The BW wire is hot with key on. The blue wire is not hot or a ground with key on or while cranking the motor.

You tested both coils (intake and exhaust)? If both coils are receiving power but not sending it to the distributor either you have bad grounds for both coils, bad wires to the distributor or something amiss within the distributor. Looking at the schematic in the factory manual it is a pretty simple circuit. There is a resistor and a condenser in the circuit as well. Connections# 39M and 40M behind the driver side headlamp.

What about the blue wire, it's starts as a white wire coming from harness. Shouldn't that wire be a signal from the ECM of some sort? Is there a way to test that signal? I don't get a crank angle sensor code or any code just 44 no code. How should I go about testing what's wrong I don't have the fsm

Here's a link to a 1989 FSM which still has the Z24i engine. What you are looking for is in the EC section. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Hardbody/d21_truck_1989.pdf
