I'm about to do the plugs on Miss Mannors. How much of a PIA is DYI?

I think it may help responsiveness. The car has sat for extended periods over the years (I suspect). The MAS was bad. I think it may have been running rich for a long time. Would this have fouled the plugs? The car runs well but the other (sold) 94 had more percieved power and umph.

Is there anything that needs to be set or viewed on a computer to properly do after new plugs are installed? If so, can any shop do a setting?

Thanks for any help/advice here.

Peter

I traded Wes some 18" Pirelli's and had him do mine. Maybe he needs something else now .

The front 6 aren't that bad, but get some good long T handle allen wrenches and work the fronts first to get the process down. Then rest up "apply fluids" and then do the others once rested and clear headed.

Expect Wes to weigh in, he may have even created an article (hint hint).

Plugs might be bad, but if too rich, catalytic converters and O2 sensors are more suspect for damage.

Frankly, I do believe I would sell the beast before EVER again changing the plugs! I did mine at 120K and, IMHO, they were OEM, the shop who was paid to do the 60K service, having no part of this job (but charging me anyway!)! I consider myself a decent shade tree mechanic (most recent job was R&Ring the speedo cluster in wife's M30 vert, no easy task either!), but the plug change on the Q was truely daunting! Now, THBS, even if the plugs were 120K old, I did not notice any difference with the new ones (from Joe), in any respect! And, those that came out were not fouled, etc!

GOOD LUCK, old man! !

Well mine are going on 150M and I'm pretty sure they're OEM. Just seems like they've got to be changed sometime. If they're good for another 150.... (I hear Dennis shaking his head.)

my plugs were first changed at 69,000 miles,no difference whatsoever...now at 187,000 they have 118,000 miles on them without any misfires or rough/unstable idle-will change this summer only because I want to fix weeping valve covers

Easy job. give yourself an hour, a plug socket, a few different size extensions, and a needle nose.

Did you do them on your G50?

Ive done the plugs 4 times I think, most recently on Rex's Q (with TCS). TCS makes it miserable on the drivers side because thers so much crap you have to remove. The allens are tough to get to, an allen socket that you can put on a socket wrench might be nice... Cant remember what size they are..

Once you get the crap off the plastic covers off and remove the plastic covers, and then remove the coil packs, its not hard. Basically theres just a bunch of little easy jobs that add up to a pain.

Certainly this would not be something id pay someone to do, unless you have more money then patience. Thats all it takes, is patience. Best thing to do is take your time (like I did) and spend an afternoon doing it.

The plug job is a really easy job, just takes time.

You dont have to reset the ECU or anything after you mess wtih it, if you want to feel better about it [placebo] unplug the battery and the ECU will be reset when you plug it back in. Unplugging the battery is good practice anyway.
