I'm at 43k... Would it be worth the hassle to change mine out? I'm desperate for better mpg's, 15 is killing me with a 100 mile commute every day!

on't have the tool 'cause you've got the 3.5L engine, whereas only the older 3.3 needs it.BTW the 3.5 doesn't have plug "leads", it has a coil screwed directly on top of each plug.

so this thread is refering to a 3.3L engine the whole time. I have a 3.5L is the spark plug change easier to do on a 3.5L.or is it a different process what the ?

I wouldn't say easier, but it should be okay as long as you are methodical and patient, as several parts have to be removed to change them.BTW only install new OEM plugs, which are platinum-tipped HGK PLFR5A-11, which should be good for around 100,000 miles, although I change mine every 50k.

As you have a 2001 on 3.5 liter engine, the procedure for changing sparkplugs is as shown in this diagram: (as you can see, each one has its own coil on top):

I just did my plugs this weekend and it was easy just take off the brackets that hold bank 1 o2 sensor wires everyone say #6 is hard 5 was the hardest for my use a straw to get them out and to put back in since there so deep + you will no have a chance in striping them out ! just take your time

Anyone used those Iridium plugs yet? I think I'm going to do the full change, plugs, wires, dizzy and all 4 O2 sensors sometime this summer and wondered if anyone's used those. I hear they're good.

I've got iridium plugs on my other ca and they work fine, although I have stuck with OEM NGKs on the Pathy as I heard that the VQ35 is particularly fussy about plugs and that the original platinum-tipped ones work the best. Not sure about the 3.3 though.

I've changed all plugs but #4 which has alot of stuff on top of it. Are there any tricks to removing the throttle wires, or the air duct or throttle assembly? Or it as simple as taking a screwdriver/wrench to it?I have the 2003 QX4.Thanks,Cliff

i did the plugs on my 3.5L and it was a piece of cake.

i used the NGK G-Power plugs they were like 7 bucks a plug at napa

real easy and i also got the K&N intake and put that in also.

both very easy to do, if your not afraid of removing things

fueler wrote: Yeah u should change them. Do it yourself. Its easy. The first 5 are childsplay, #6 just needs the special Nissan tool (under your rear seat with the tools) and you climb on top of your engine like a monkey, just follow the spark plug wire with your hand (cause you cant see it back there) And youre fine with old plug wires.
What if I can't find the magic Nissan tools? Only items I have under the rear seat is the jack and some long rod for the jack.

Just make do with regular tools or can it not be done without them?

Thanks

Brian

If your info is correct and you have a 2001 pathfinder, you have the 3.5L engine, not the 3.3L. The 3.5L does not need that tool. Although you will need extensions.

This thread is only two pages long and this topic has been covered in it.

And the '01 will require some disassembly, esp. for the back two plugs on the US driver's side. I've got a 2001 PF and I've done it twice now. I start on the US passenger's side, front to rear, then the US driver's side, front torear. After four plugs, stop and assess your available time. The last two will probably take a bit longer than the first four. If that means another day,no problem.

The coils take a good yank to pull out. Get as far under the coil as you can.Don't even THINK about yanking the wire.

After you pull the coil, blow out the hole with compressed air (canned air would probably work). The '01 isn't nearly as bad as my '87 and '95 were for sand around the plugs (it could be like the Sahara down there) but I've gotten a few grains out on the '01.

One more thing: It's an alloy head. You want to put Anti-Seize compound onthe threads. I use Permatex, it's really messy, but I've used it on Nissan alloyheads since 1973ish and it's been fine. Just don't get any on the porcelain. The last time round on the '01, I did all six first, and set them aside well clearof where I was working, then put the anti-seize away and washed up. Youreally don't want the anti-seize on the porcelain.

You will probably be OK. I've done it twice and the factory gaskets are still there. I would have a backup plan if the gasket tears. Mine is push the PFinto the side yard, and drive the 'vette to the dealership whenever it's open.If you don't have back-up wheels, have a good friend who knows what's goingdown and could help. Also worth knowing what dealer parts departments areopen on Saturday afternoon.
