where are you planing on living? are you going to live with roommates? because $25k in So Cal is alright

Rent in decent part of town will be anywhere from $800~$1kand then everything is expensive too. so you have to figure the cost on all the other stuff yourself.

I would recomend getting an apartment with room mates so all your bills would be cut in half...

I could be wrong though... I have a house and all so i forgot how much it would cost a single guy to live on... lol, sorry..

I'm thinking how that wouldn't even cover my mortage... hahaha

God damn.. So Cal is expensive... but you CAN find cheap places to live ina decent part of the city...

i would recomend living in Tustin area, cheaper than Irvine I think but just as nice and safe...

What do you consider decent? Studio apartments in south orange county tend to run about a grand a month. It might be helpful to find yourself a roommate. $25K a year will not get you too far, but you can survive on it if you are willing to give up having a life and have no debt.

When deciding potential pay, you should look at the job you will be doing. There's no simple decent pay for socal category. You get paid based on what you do and what you bring to the table. And this is true anywhere you go.

$25k? Hope you like cup-o-noodles. That's *before* tax right? So...roughly 3/4 after tax (CA income tax blows hairy bubbles, plus fed tax). $18750/year take home. Housing (nice neighborhood) including utilities (gas, electric, cable, water), say $1000/month. $6750/year left. Insurance (high too) is maybe $750/year with a good record (convenient!). $6000/year left. Roughly $120/week to spend on gas, car maintenance, food, clothes, shaving cream, toilet paper, hotties, etc etc. Not poverty, but you probably won't be having too many keggers. Housing is the biggest expense; roommates might get you an extra $100/week or more.

Last I checked, reasonably priced apartments in Irvine were going for ~$1200 a month. Here in Long Beach, they are about $1000. There are some $600 places around, but they're not the greatest places to live, especially if you have a nice car.

Truth be told, 25k a year around here isn't much to get by on. With a good roommate though, its not impossible. Good room mates are kind of like good girlfriends though... 95% of them need to be trained and/or house broken. It's not their fault, their parents just never showed them how to do simple things. Also, not everyone will always contribute equally. Yet, all of that aside...

If you can find someone else making about 25k a year, the two of you should be alright somewhere near Irvine. I grew up in Orange. It's kind of hot during the summer, but the places are nice for the most part and it's convenient to get to Irvine from there. Tustin is pretty nice. Santa Ana pretty much blows. South Orange County is too freakin expensive and not worth the added cost of living. Although there are some kind of inexpensive places around Mission Viejo and Lake Forest. If you go that far south though, you have to commute INTO Irvine, and then back out of it. The 405 = sux0rz

10,000 miles/year at 20 miles/gallon = 500 gallons* $2/gallon = $1000 year ~ $20/week. Food @ $10/day ($3/meal!) = $70/week.

Again, housing is the biggest variable. It has the most room for change and can make the biggest difference to your budget. Check out http://www.latimes.com classifieds for rentals and roommates wanted. I've heard of apartments.com too, but never tried them.

There's no way that living in LA and commuting to Irvine is a good idea.
