http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q0W6rY4is0 my harbody with a ka24e is making this noise. i think its a bad chain guide, or the whole timing set needs replacing. the chain tension seems good though. it makes the ticking at start up ive read about, but that seems common so no big deal there. it only makes this noise once its warm. and it doesnt seem to be constant once its warm either. thought it could be an oil pump too. any ideas? sorry for the annoying accent i did at the end

from what i have found researching mine that is guide and chain, once warm the tensioner pushes all the way out and noise is gone. You can crank cold and open hood and listen if it is coming from front of motor it is chain and guide otherwise it may be ticking vale from valve cover on top. Valve will tick the chain is more of a rattle like ball bearings in a can almost. Mine is doing it and needs fixing soon. I hear if you let it go it can rub hole in casing that has water jacket and really mess things up

Courtesy of the all-plastic, tension side chain guide found in pre-95 KA-E's.

well ive just gone ahead and going after the timing chain. seems the most likely. the only problem im running into is i cant get the oil pan off. i got 12 bolts off the bottom, and it wont move. are there other bolts? this is my first nissan so im learning as i go. the thing wont move. hitting it with a soft face hammer is getting me nowhere

mine took some prying with a screwdriver just to get it loose then use a soft hammer to get the rest to budge

well its all fixed. it was the timing chain. more specifically the tensioners and guides were bad. it had the metal backed guides installed, but the plastic still broke and ended up in the pan. all fixed now though. did an oil pump and water pump while i was in there
