Today my 89 240sx strated to sound like a diesel engine and when I removed the oil fill cap smoke just was shooting out. I shut the car down and now I am not sure what direction to take. I removed the oil dip stick to check oil level and I noticed that the oil was Very hot and steamy, almost smokey. The oil level was fine, any thoughts???

Need more information. Driveability symptoms, any smoke out teh exhaust, dropping oil level, etc.

Hopefully I'm just jumping to conclusions here, but it sounds like the symptoms of blow-by. Combustion gas getting past the piston rings, into the crankcase...hence the smoky oil and rough idle (loss of compression)

Did this happen suddenly? Has your car been running progressively worse for some time? What's the mileage?

122,000 miles. The car has recently had the injectors rebuilt and a new fuel pressure rugulator installed. The car runs great then has a couple of days of bad, hesitation on moving from stop, occational sluggish running. I was told a while back that the timing chain would not las a week and that was 3 months ago. When I start the car there is a rattling sound but it quiets down. But now there is serious knocking and this smoke from the oil fill hole and very Hot oil. There is no real noticable smoke from the exhaust. The engine temp is in the normal range. The car died and I tried to start it and after about 30 min it did finally start. I headed for home and when I pulled the car in the garage and opened the hood this is when I really noticed the terrible noise from the engine. I have checked the oil level and it is fine. Any other information please ask and I will try and fill in the blanks...Thanks for asking for more...

If you had the injectors and regulator rebuilt/replaced...was there a massive fuel leak beforehand? Lots of fuel in the oil? That would wear down the cylinders in short order. Then, again, you're looking at blow-by. The tolerances are exceeded, the compression ring can't hold the combustion gases, and they blow past the piston into the crankcase. This is why 1) the oil is extremely hot (combustion charge is HOT HOT HOT) and 2) there is smoke pouring out of the oil filler cap, probably out of the dipstick tube and PCV valve as well, as it is seeking an outlet where ever it can.

I don't think your chain is the cause of this specific problem. If it broke, the engine wouldn't be running at all. Even if, let's suppose, your chain was stretched to the point of skipping time, the engine would run like junk, but there shouldn't be smoke in your oil. And from what you have described, it isn't burning oil through the exhaust. The smoke is actually IN the oil passages.

I hate to say it, but I think your rings/cylinders may be excessively worn. Try doing a compression test and see if the cylinders are within the correct range. If they aren't, well...now may be a good time for an engine swap or rebuild.

Word. Definetly sounds like some grenaded rings and worn cylinders. Get a compression test, it should reveal wonders.

Thanks everyone for the tips and help. I am off to check my compression...
