Hey Forum, have '95 Pathfinder 4WD, A/T. When backing up I hear a 'clunking' sound. Only happens when backing up. Sound similar to bad CV joints (clicking), just different sound. Any advice is good.

Repetitive clunk-clunk-clunk, or just a one-time when engaging R?

Backing up and turning...together, or each? Sorry, you answered my question, but then added a symptom.

How frequent is the noise relative to tire rotation, approx? I mean, backing up 10ft, how many times do you hear the noise? Is the noise consistent with a given distance, or somewhat intermittent?

Since you have a 95 SE, perhaps you have disc brakes? If so, are your caliper bracket bolts still there, and tight?

Helpful requirement from the Rogue Forum:

4. WE CAN'T GUESS WHAT NOISES ARE: Ask 10 different mechanics/members what a "rattle" is, and they will give you 300 different possibilities (ball joint, exhaust, shield, strut, hub, lose hatch, etc). Please don't even bother. A "rattle" can be metallic (tin or solid metal), plastic, body parts, junk we put into a car, etc. A tap, rattle, ting, clank, or scratching noise can describe 100,000 different parts and yet be different or the same description for one another; depends on the person. You call it a rattle, I call it tapping, she calls it a shaking metal, and he calls it a metallic noise. Please don't even bother posting that you hear something rolling/making noise INSIDE THE CAR - unless you have turned your whole car upside down FIRST. We are not there with you. I am tired of reading new threads that get updated a week later with: "flashlight in the trunk, baby rattle, etc" - when members spent their time, coming up with possibly could be wrong with your car mechanically. Its just not fair to everyone.

-4a. POST VIDEO CLIPS OF YOUR NOISES: If you ask a question regarding some noise, make sure to accompany your thread/post with a video- with an AUDIBLE sound clip. we are not mind readers, and don't know how you differentiate between taps/bings/tangs/rattles, etc.

WE WILL LOVE TO READ ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES, AFTER YOU HAVE RESOLVED THE PROBLEM! SOME PEOPLE FIND A STRANGE LOCATION, SOMETHING COULD ROLL INTO - SO FEEL FREE TO SHARE AFTER THE FACT!

Thanks Rogue One for your Dialog however, maybe as Moderator, you should allow those that may have experienced that same 'clucking' sound and found their solution to answer and not be swayed by someone with no interest in that problem. The problem I noted is real and also the request for constructive feedback.

Dragster, don't read too much into Rogue One's post. As moderator, I'm certain he's seen hundreds of "noise" threads that iterate in conversations just to get all the of the symptoms. I also 100% agree with the purpose and content of Rogue One's post, especially since noises are an extremely subject thing especially in written form. I personally find that I can diagnose many things with little info, but the more, the merrier...and that's the crux of his post.

I cannot say I've experienced the noise you're experiencing, but having disassembled, rebuilt, and customized nearly every aspect of an R50 drivetrain (which is practically identical to your WD21 drivetrain, and including the fact that I have probably the only application of rear WD21 disc brakes on an R50, and have rebuilt several of our LSDs--even as recently as yesterday), I consider myself qualified to help when it comes to "things that rotate forward and reverse".

The noise you are experiencing, whatever it is, is abnormal. The ONLY system that actively changes "symmetry" when in reverse is the transmission. You'd probably notice transmission issues if that were suspect, of course. By "symmetry" here, I mean it's the same in both forward and reverse. The only other system that is not symmetrical are the brakes (potentially in your case, if you have rear discs) because if a caliper bracket bolt were loose or missing on one side, the disc brake drag in one direction would be different than the same on the other.

Thinking outside of the box, any "new" deviation that would disrupt symmetry could be a crack bearing race that someone creates a ridge that it is more pronounced in one direction than another (think of a sidewalk with a tree root underneath that causes the concrete to lift...riding a bike over it in one direction is worse than the opposite). Not saying that's the case here, but just a scenario. And yes, bearing races can crack...I just replaced one, in fact, for carrier bearings on the LSD I rebuilt yesterday.

That all said, without more info, I can only guess at some things for now. Anything that you can provide that complies with Rogue One's post would be beneficial.
