Has anyone tried to reduce the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) characteristics on the Q. Mine is fairly quiet but I would be interested if there is anything that can be done to further reduce particulalry road noise. I see that Zeibart offer a sound proofing undercoating. Has anyone tried this

Hi,

Depending on how serious you are, there's a product called Dynamat Xtreme (dynamat.com)

It's a layer of pliable tar-like substance with a sheet of aluminum on top of it. It's self adhesive, once you remove the wax paper backing. You install it under your carpet & behind the trim panels wherever you wish.

I went a little overboard with my last vehicle, roof, floor, trunk, two layers in the doors, etc. It sounded like a vault when you closed the doors & accentuated the modest sound system like you wouldn't believe.

It's heavy & can get expensive, but if quiet's what you want, Dynamat delivers big time.

After posting my question I found using SEARCH a 2 page thread on the whole issue of sound reduction. I guess my desire is to mainly reduce road noise and was thinking about the wheel wells as the starting point. On a recent visit to Zeibart to check out their undercoating prices I noticed that they offer a spray applied sound proofing material. I assume this is just a thick layer of something they would apply to the underside of the car.

I think to do this justice it would be necessary to temporarily remove the plastic wheel arch liners to apply the spray to the outside of the wheel wells

No need to remove 'em.

Put it on a lift, remove the wheels, mask the wells, and go at it.

I'd actually like to do this myself as well - Cut down on some of the noise from my big fat directional 255/50's. :D

If the spray-on stuff youre talking about is SEAFOAM, I have not heard good things about it.

Try http://www.soundcoat.com .

Spray on coatings are good for lowering resonant frequencies, but a more serious approach with decoupled isolated sound barriers is required for true sound energy attenuation.

You might also try replacing the weather strips also..... Mine needs that, although I think its slighly quieter by putting on a rubber dressing.....

After riding in my Q (everyday) for the last few months, anything else I ride in seems VERY loud... I think my Q is loud, but is vault like when compared to anyother car......
