options28 wrote:OK Mark, the foam arrived today and I installed it as you instructed . It was an easy fix and after test driving, I too am impressed with the quiet it brings to the cabin. In my opinion well worth the $60 investment(includes shipping) for the 1/2 inch sheet.
In the trunk I just cut the foam to match my cargo mat as it is well contoured to the floor, layed the foam on the trunk floor and the cargo mat on top of the foam. When I removed the rear seat the green felt pad was moved to the rear of the seat and thus not insulating as it should.
Used the pad as a template and then layed it back on top of the foam after it was cut to fit.
It was all easy and really does make a difference, I was skeptical but it does work.

Relentless got it! Pull the too tabs and out it comes. The back part is only four bolts located around where all the seat belts attach. I am planning on coming at that area from inside the trunk but I did Dynamat that and you could put a 1/4" or so layer in that area? Just have to make your own template or cut around stuff like the trunk pass through.

thanks for the info. that was my next question--whether I would be able to put apply the matting from the trunk side and not from behind the back seat.

Antz, out of your 1183 posts i thought i would count up how many of them were actually informative, helpful, on topic, or even remotely related to something someone might want to know or hear... well needless to say we are still waiting for that first one to come.

You are both pretty so no fighting please :)

Thefoamfactory is one if not the cheapest place to get this neoprene and it really does make a difference.

Good luck.

i really wish that guy from the craigslist add still had his stuff available. It was a roll of 1/2" neoprene rubber that was 4 ft by 60 ft (big ol roll) and he wanted like $200. I emailed him about it and then he just removed his add and didnt write back. oh well.

Stephen, and you guys. You've got a luxury "sports sedan" not a luxocruiser, where the only sound is your 300 watt superduper Ipod player. The M's have a nice throaty sound that gives that "sports" sound ambiance to the machine. Putting a bunch of rubber between you and your machine, is akin to basically neutering that audible "sports" aspect of the M. But then Stephen, you know all about, neuter...

I'm not trying to get rid of the throaty sound of my car, I enjoy that sound and often drive with no radio on to listen to my car. I was just hoping to reduce some of the road noises and other distracting sounds that take away from the engine sound.
And yes I am married and therefore neutered

Are you two related? You fight like brothers! :)

Both have valid points. Antzrus yes it is a sport sedan and yes we all like the exhaust note BUT...drive a BMW 5 series (Supposably sportier then ours) and there is a definate din to the road noise! The sound or lack there of reinforces the QUALITY of the car, not that it is neutered or isolated just peaceful.

And the RUBBER we are putting in comes right out with 2 seconds worth of effort. So we are not permenantly altering our sports sedans just making it more peaceful to drive.

So, antzrus, buy some of the neoprene ($50) and "SEE" what you think. You can always sell it right here since it will be cut to the exact size and you would be out very little.

Don't you remember MOM saying "how do you know you do not like it if you have not tried it?" Much like broccoli :)

Sincerely,

Mark

I can't wait for it to be nice and hot so I can smell all that steamy rubber wafting from the back seat and trunk :)

Possibly you are not running the DWS and tires are your problem?

Listen, Stephen has already gotten into trouble wearing his black neoprene body suit after dark in his neighborhood. Let's not continue to advocate such behavior. He really needs a healthy role model what w/his obsession w/the contents of my saddlebags, black neoprene rubber and all...

You may say i wear a black neoprene rubber suit (which is a fib) but remember when you got hit by a car and exploded into a hundred double-ended-ding-dongs, rubber fists and ball gags? Rumor has it that a rainbow shot out of your as$ and lit up the sky like the batman signal.

How did you know? You must have been there. It was you who hit me? I had both posterior grade and anterior grade amnesia thereafter. I can't remember. So it was you, you SOB.

By the time the EMT's scraped me off the asphalt, you had run off with all the rubber fists-and hard rubber ball gags. You nasty boy-you.

Come on now. Lay off the neoprene already! :nono:

Let's try and be serious for just a moment here Stephen. Could noisy tires be causing a lot of the "road noise" that you are trying to mask?

No it has nothing to do with my tires and im not refering to any specific noise or even a lot of noise, i was just saying that if you can eliminate some of the unwanted sounds like rocks hitting your wheel well, or the sounds going over bumps as just 2 examples, then why not. Ive had brand new conti-extremes on before and i have new hankooks on now, both of which have little noise to them. Lets just say if you drove a lexus and our car both with the exact same tires on etc you would still see that the lexus is much quieter. Im not trying to reach that level or i would have got a lexus, but if $60 puts me a few steps in that direction, that sounds alright to me (pun very much intended).

Antz, Thanks for your concern though, and congrats on your very first useful post!!!!!

I received my 1/2" Neoprene Foam (HQ) and 1/4" Neoprene Foam (HQ) today and immediately went to work.
I installed the 1/2" HQ foam in the trunk and in the rear seat. I then installed the 1/4" HQ foam under the rear floor mat and under the front mats. It was a pain reinstalling the rear seat but after a 5 minute struggle I got the locking latches secured.

My initial impression: the rear cabin was a big difference. Road noise was better muted and bumps were less of a thud noise but rather a sharp bump sound. Hard to explain. I did notice more sound emanating from the front end so I think there's improvements to be made there somehow. I have a lot of scraps left over so I'll make good use of it in the front cabin.
In my opinion the biggest noticeable difference was how much louder and clearer the Bose sound system sounded while driving. Not sure if you guys have noticed this but the Sound System sounds much more louder and cleaner (especially the bass). For some reason it sounded like I added an additional sub. I literally had to lower the bass down 2 notches. I was impressed. Definitely worth the 77 bucks!

I just got my 3/4" HQ foam yesterday. If I'm lucky, I'll get a chance to install it in the trunk and maybe rear seat.

I had a chance to install the 3/4" HQ neoprene tonight.

I could not get the rear seat to cooperate, so I gave up on that and installed the crazy thick foam under the floor mats, too.

I took some sound pressure level readings with my Droid X with a free app. Now, I know... it's not right. I used to work 10 years in architectural acoustics so I'm ashamed I don't have anything better. Literally! (The only sound level meter I have is packed away deep!)

So here's what I got:

Test conditions: Engine at idle, same RPM, in a quiet garage. Measurement device resting the nav screen.

With foam in trunk only: 3 dB improvement over nothing
With foam in trunk and under all 4 floor mats: 4 dB improvement over nothing

And I know: I don't know if it's dBA or dBC because this free app doesn't have it. And no I don't feel like downloading another app to check again. It's good enough for me. The point is, it DID make a difference enough to be picked up by a machine.

Haven't tested it on the road, but anything is better than nothing!

So glad you could actually test for results! Sometimes what you THINK sounds quieter is not really but in this case it truly is! I too was very pleased with the results and my 7 year old daughter even likes it! She can fall asleep just that much faster in the perfect solitude that the noeprene brings :)

Good feedback and glad I took the time to share! It is a real easy way to improve the road noise issue that Infiniti should have addressed!

Alright, well there is a guy local to me that is selling large rolls of "rubber/foam/neoprene" he says that are 4ft by 60ft and 1/2" thick. I was thinking this would be great for a sound barrier but obviously i could never use that amount of product and its not very cost effective to buy the entire roll and then just use like 10ft of it. Would there be any interest from anyone here for some of this? Im not sure how easy/expensive it would be to ship out to people in sections but i could look into it if people wanted. Im located in Kansas city, MO if anyone is near by and might want some. Just thought i would put out a feeler and go from there.

I ordered this product, but it seems to be taking Foam Factory forever to ship it, anyone else have this same experience? I will be using it in addition to my audio upgrade that I am documenting in another thread, ( Bose diminishing bass ) I will update you when I get it done...

After driving around with the neoprene for a few days, I removed the padding from under the floor mats. I couldn't stand the smell anymore. And from what I know, there aren't any truly effective ways to remove that smell, other than hoping the smell just goes away or airing it out.

I drove around some more without the interior pads (still got a big chunk stinking up my trunk) and I realized how much better this might be with more mass.

Foam is great for absorbing higher frequency sounds, but you need mass for the lower frequencies.

I thought about getting some Dynamat-like material and creating a hybrid pad with the neoprene attached to the Dynamat. But that Dynamat is pricey.

Then I stumbled across this product that has a foam layer plus a dense vinyl layer as well. Weighs a hefty 1 lb per square foot (!)

http://www.secondskinaudio.com/noise-ba ... er-Pro.php

I've just placed an order for four rolls. Yes, I'll be the guinea pig here. I plan to replace the trunk pad as well as going under the floor mats. I'll even try to get it under the rear seats.

And yes, I'll take more before/after sound level tests.
