I'm hearing a grinding/rubbing sounds coming from my front end...normally when I slow down and the weight shifts to the front of the car. My mechanic told me it was my CV axle, so I had that replaced...didn't eliminate the sound. Then he told me I needed a new wheel bearing...did that and the noise didn't go away. Now he's telling me to replace the wheel bearing on the other side of the car and I'm not about to do that until I get a better understanding of the causes of this type of noise. It's sounds like a rubbing sound...not like metal on metal or any clanging or anything like that...more of a rubbing sound. And it is loudest when I slow down to stop and the weight shifts to the front. It really sounds like it's coming from the front passenger wheel area where I've had all that work done.

He also told me that my ball joint was loose but I'm not seeing/hearing any symptoms of that when I turn or hit bumps or whatever.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what this might be and/or what to do next?? Thanks!

My guess is that the rubbing sound is a sheet metal brake shield. No big deal, it happened to my I30 more than once in the 300,000 miles I have owned her. Pull off the wheel and bend it slightly so it no longer rubs against the rotor.

Sounds logical...but I don't think that's it. It only makes the noise at certain speeds and mostly when I slow down and the weight shifts to the front of the car. If it were something rubbing on the brake system, I'd think I'd hear it all the time, no?
