i bought some 17x8 5zigen FN01R-C 35mm offset wheels last week and im now ready to order some tires for these beautiful rims. ive done a lot of research (used tire size calculators, read the tire question sticky, and put alot of research into the tires im looking at)

found that a 235/40/17 tires is very close to stock size(.8% larger, and also fits the 17x8 wheel) so that should be good to keep all the ratios and speedo working correctly. and i came down to two tires the yoko AVS ES100 and the PZero Nero. the PZero is on clearance at tirerack for $103 and the ES100 is going for $109. what i like about the Nero is that it has superior traction, ride comfort, (pretty much everything) compared to the ES100 except for tread wear :(. what do you guys think before i order? is the size alright? it is basically comes down to, buy the tire that gives better performance but worse tread wear or the tire that still gives exelent performance and better tread wear. please help me out with your opinions/ suggestions.

Pzero, accept no substitutes. The Pzero will handle heat better, traditionally.

I love the Pzero.(and yes, alan knew I would say that)

seriously, you cant go wrong either way. both great tires, I am just partial to pirelli because of the construction and my own experience with them.-chet

yea. im leaning towards the PZero, especially since they have a clearance price on them. i was more conserned with the tire size. do you or grant think that size will be a good fit?

well the tires arrived last week and they look awesome. my wheels arrived today and they look even better than the tires. out of curiosity i went back to look at it's specs on tirerack and it turns out the tire i got is made for 17 by 8.5-9.5 the wheels i got are 17x8. i had looked at the specs on the es100 (they fit 8 through 9.5) in the same tire size so i assumed they were the same when ordering. do think anything bad will happen if i use a .5" smaller in width rim than suggested in specs? the wheels and tires seem to match up pretty well by eye and i think it will be ok. i just want to make sure they dont explode upon contact with the rim :)

I list a 8" wheel as the miniumum width for a 235-40-17... should fit fine. I mean, jerome squeezed a 235-40-17 onto a 17x7 (hah!) and you got a full 1" more width. it should be fine, Im not sure why pirelly diverges from michelin and yokohama on their rim width reccomendations. they wont explode, at worst they'll bulge a bit at the bead(yes that compromises traction a bit..but nothing a street driven car would notice I would wager).

:) hope that helps-chet

thanks, gives me some confidense. the tire is recomended for 17x8.5 so its only .25" less on each side
