I've searched and read several threads on noise here. None exactly describe my complaint, although one about the "raspy" sound sort of got close. (Do a search for "raspy").

My 2010 Rogue has an annoying sound, almost raspy, but only at certain speeds and throttle positions. It really sounds more like a big V8 with the air cleaner cap upside down (you younger ones may not relate to this, but it was a throaty sound). This sound is similar, but just annoying. I can let up on the accelerator just a little, or push it down just a little, and it goes away. It may be a harmonic thing, and I know nothing about sound, but it seems everything has to be...just right (or would that be "wrong"?) to occur.

It comes from the engine area, but it could be mistaken for a muffler problem if it wasn't the wrong end.

We've had the car about eight months, and I really don't think it did it when new.

I know this is vague, and for that I apologize. I was just hoping someone would recognize this and say "yeah, mine did that and..."

OK i think i know what you are talking about and i am about to visit the dealer and drill them about it. It is a weird sound that you hear from time to time when you press down on the accelerator just hard enough. It is a noise that is very difficult to explain but sounds like a" straining sound" like a "muffled scream" that happens some of the time but not always at moderate speed. It is not a noise that you get at start up but a noise that you get when you want to go a little faster while driving. However if you press down harder the sound goes away but now you are going a lot faster than you wanted to.

I never owned a v8 but does my feeble attempt to describe the noise sound accurate?

I did not bring it up here because i thought i would stumble across the answer. But i am certainly glad that you did bring it up.

Now i will definitely let the dealership know about it to see if they can get to the bottom of it.

I never really paid attention to any noise in general as it pertains to the engine or the quietness of the cabin until I went on these threads and it raised my awareness. :rotfl

I did notice perhaps a similiar sound when I was going up to 80mph one time and going really hard on the gas pedal. Was it a raspy sound? On That, I might not be 100% sure but I felt it was because it was a 4 cylinder using all it's power to its fullest potential ( as if your heading towards redlining). Coming from a layperson, it sounded like a racing engine if you know what I mean. Not in a bad way but a good healthy accelerating sound. I would use raspy as a description because you can hear whats going on as the engine is working hard during the heavy throttle. I always tended to think smaller 4 cylinders as being kinda loud or raspy than the hugher cylinder models. :woot:

Tommy, I believe we're talking about the same thing. Just the slightest change in throttle position, either way, and it quits. I may make a trip to the dealer as soon as possible just to see what they say. Wonder if the Altima or Sentra with the same motor/transmission combination does this?

Has your Rogue always done this, or do you remember? I'm nearly certain ours did not when we first got it.

Casper, I don't think this is the sound Tommy and I are hearing. My Maxima makes a "good healthy" sound on acceleration. This is not the same. As Tommy says, it's like a straining sound and doesn't sound good at all. At high speed I'm pleased with the quietness of the cabin, Continental tires and all.

I'm going to take note next time I'm in it and see exactly what speed and rpm it occurs. You haven't made any exact observations, have you, Tommy?

The VQ series engine in the Maxima is a completely different motor.

I find the high gearing of the CVT can produce some weird engine noises. I don't recall the same in my '03 Altima... then again, it had a 5spd manual... not an automatic or CVT.

I don't think it's a cause for concern.

I was just using the sound of the Maxima as a comparision-it's not the same sound, in other words. I keep thinking an Altima with the same eng/trans will come into my shop and I'll have the opportunity to drive it.

I did figure out today that the noise occurs in a slight pull (hill or acceleration) @ 1700 rpm approximately. I am also now dubious about my belief it comes from the motor area-it almost sounded like the muffler today, which would make it even less a concern.

Maybe Tommy will drive his and see what his opinion is.

thanks, Philip

I finally got the opportunity to drive an Altima with the same eng/trans and it did not make this noise. It also had dual outlets on the muffler. Wonder if that's the problem?
