I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Sopdadope needs your help! As most of you already know he's in Cambodia doing humanitarian work but something bad has happened. Here's an email from a member of his travelling group.

I wrote you to inform you of the adverse series of events that have befallen our mutual friend Sophann. During an evening trip around some of the Angkor temples our party ran into a band of misfits pillaging some of the ancient ruins. The situation turned ugly when the bandits refused to stop bagging the artifacts. The argument soon broke out into a scuffle. Because they were armed we didn't dare challenge them and they made off with the all the currency we had between us and our passports.

I have written to his family and he's asked that I write all his friends back home. I can easily present other identification to the US Embassy but this is a serious matter for him because all his forms of identification are gone and it while be a long time before he can receive them from home. Neither of us have anymore than a mere few riels to get by for the next couple weeks. Money has been sent but is barely sufficient to cover our medical expenses from injuries sustained during the melee. Sophann could not write the email himself due to a broken wrist and other injuries. As per his request, I will keep you updated with emails on our situation.

Sincerely, Chris Hayward

Guys, our buddy needs your help to get back on his feet. I'm asking for all his friends here to help pitch in. I dunno how i can get the money to him but I'll post again when I find out more iformation.

This sounds a little suspicious to me. I am assuming you have it on good authority or else you wouldn't have posted it on the forum that this is not a hoax, but it still sounds a little odd.

Never-the-less, keep us posted and I hope it all works out for him. I have little free money, but I would be willing to help all I could with a money order.

In that case I would gladly contribute.

A good friend of mine had a friend who went to Zimbabwe and got eaten by a crocodile a couple weeks ago. Very sad way for a teenage girl to die.

I dont like the whole idea of visiting foreign countries.

Sop's a good friend of mine, I wouldn't make this stuff up. I bet if I had a zero attached to my post count you'd believe me?

I got him on the horn early this morning because of the big time zone difference. He sounds like he's in bad shape but he's coming along. Those ***holes made off with a large amount of loot too because Sop was telling me he was carrying currency in US dollars, cambodian and thai money too.

If money wasn't tight, I'd bail him out but he has helped out a lot of people on this board either by doing work on our cars well below dealer costs or cutting some killer deals or providing info. If we get lots of people to chip in like $1 to $5 each that will help him out alot.

Western Union would probbaly be teh preferred methjod <unless> his bank has a branch in country .

Anotehr way would be to deposit $$ into his account and his ATM will be able to W/D in Cambodia.

I dont know anything about paypal at all.:(

I can just tell you, that CC's and even plain jane ATM cards, can W/D from their respective accounts anywhere in the world, where ATM machines stand (which is anywhere you have phone lines).

I know some of u guys are cautious and with good reason. Sop told me he cancelled his cc's and his paypal is the only account he has left because it links to his bank account. I know someone else here can confirm this. It's my guess that his his paypal card was left at the hotel because it's not accepted at ancient ruins? Not trying to be funny but I don't see why he'd take the card with him.

Just to be clear, we can paypal funds to the [email protected] paypal account directly, and that'll help him out? I'm willing to send a few bucks.

can one of the mods look up his email address in the NICO database and see if it matches his paypal email addy? Not that it would be a definitive answer to the validity of all of this, but it would certanly help if the two matched...

It matches, Fiz.

I have done business with Soph, and he's a stand-up guy.

Hell, this situation doesn't sound any wierder than going on a mission to Cambodia and riding around on a water buffalo.

I'm down with hooking him up.
